Listen to Fred, or you will be stuck doing jobs like this
Not much that i like here, but i know lotsa people like this kind of imagery. It would be fun to do this correctly.
Be careful about what you show people, the pressures of illustration tend to narrow your work. You show work to a potential client, they like what they see and get fixated on that image. Not a good thing if you like to explore things. Also don't take on too much work, it will also cut down on your ability to experiment. I bet Dhab will come on this soon. They must be pumpin' him/:
Oh, what don't I like? The drawing is screwed just about everywhere, I had to use a photo for the head (could only add light source, no other changes), what's up with the mayor's head down there, the colors are pretty tastless, contrast is way to high, the lighting in totally unmotivated, the castle is from that even worse lord of the rings thing..... Sigh
But I liked Lion, he has a really good eye. |

did they have bowflex once upon a time...??? Har...jes messin...If that armor is not a photo, that's some damn fine work my friend...Reminds me of military illustrator, Angus McBride, but with more umph...of course he paints in gouache, that tends to lose its umph in reproduction. I take it you are doing a series of Lord of the Rings images. Pretty amazing at lightning speed as usual...wacom away...

ahh man that's tacky! it was even tacky back when that game "barbarian" came out in the eighties.
I do like the depth on the corpses though.
what was this for?
I'd love to see all the stuff that makes you cringe spooge. I remember hearing that you did some pics for Bicentenial man and What Dreams May Come (I think) which you despised. It'd be cool to hear why (other than they are both lame Robin Williams movies) |

nice nice nice!
Hm yah, the guy looks a little bit too contrasted as you said, and his face seems to have some odd colors..my favourite part is the tower though. The corpses on the ground seems to be blurred at some strange spots, almost like you have resized and forgot to refine.
aww poor mayor |

Spooge: Hehe. The colors and contrasts remind me of some Eni Oken stuff like some of the stuff she's done in those new Zork games. Man that light to the left is blinding! =) Excellent work though! Maybe in a few thousand years I'll be able to do something remotely close to this...

Wow. Parts of that are about as 'photoreal' as I've seen you do, Craig. Unfortunately I guess I still prefer your more 'painterly' work (some of the stuff that still betrays your I.D. gouache illo roots!) This image seems to have a bit too much of a 'composited' look. I'm unclear of how much is scanned and pasted in (showing what an admirable job you've done of blending) but it still seems to have a disjointed feeling.
I tend to lose the depth between the daggar and the chest as well. Freddy's right though, the armor does rock! i like the lion too.
Nevertheless, still blows me away,as usual!! |

The only thing that 'bothers' me a abit is that the blade doesn't stand out much, but then again "how do you know, you weren't there!" |

wow thatis a stunning image craig! even tho you can find flaws. I love the ammount of detail you have put into it.
What bothers me about it is The face doesn't match the body, the colours seem off and the body looks much more oiled/reflective than the face. Also the body looks more lit on the left and the face on the right.
The guy seems kinda super imposed, maybe because of his high contrast... The left pec (our left) looks too big and seems to bulge towards us too much, looks kinda unatural.
Background is kinda over blurry.
The blade could of been sharper, I think it blends into the body too much.
I know I'm nobody to critique on your work, hope you don't mind... |

Man alive, I wish all the pictures I did that I didn't like looked this good. (Or even the pictures I did that I DID like) Still, it is good to see that you still give your work a critical eye. That kind of objective observation is probably what keeps your working looking so damn good.
As I aspire to reach your level of skill, I have to wonder if there is someone who's work you admire or that you wish to be as good as (is that even possible?). |

The armor is painted, and as I said, the face is a photo I worked the photo up, but in the end, the only thing I could get away with was the lighting on the right side. His face is also very round and smooth. It was kinda my fault too- I could not make it to the photo shoot to light him and maybe spread some crisco around. The client wanted more and more contrast. It reminds me of one of those GAF viewmaster things with the 3-d effect.
Some of the shapes in the body are nice. At one time the castle did look good. I can dig through my backups and find it...
Cos, no I don't mind a bit if you or anyone else tells me what they don't like. The customer is always right, and the customer is defined as a group of people that does not include me. I like crits from everyone from really advanced artists all the way to my Dad, who knows nothing about art and hates everything I do His crits are so honest and direct, and he leaves it to me to figure out how to fix things. The worst is an art director who kinda knows what is going on (a little knowledge is a fatal thing) and makes really bad directives about how to fix things. i prefer "the arm looks funny." |

His hand looks funny...
no really, lighting wise that is, like you have desaturated the bright-glowy side of his hand.
really.

Craig : Yeah little knowledge sounds like me.. very little ;D Yeah I get what you mean. Just been trying to look harder at images and decypher em more nowadays, gets whats left of
my brain working ;D even tho the advice isn't so great.
I was just curious as of how much reference you used for this pic? (if any) |

Great pic Spooge,
This one doesn't look like it has had the same amount of care lavished on it as we are used too with your images, but I asume that might be due to restrictions placed upon you.......I suppose that's the way it goes in this buisiness.
Keep on Spooging.
