I find it always sad for a person who gets not many replies or even none...
So, I reply this one too (after all, I'm getting close to my first 100 posts..hehheh)
Dines, I don't love sweet and happy things but never mind. That's no reason for me to say nothing about the pic...
Like Mr. Weasel said this is very artistic, I agree with him. This kind of "painting" has some sort of "feeling", a own style...
It's a lovely pic...Keep posting...Dines...

Here's a question... what are some of the features you used in that Artgem program? To me, all I see are multiple sized opaque airbrush strokes composing the cute ducky holding a ball, as able to be done in Photoshop.
I used Painter once. It was pretty wierd that you had to press the "dry" button to "dry" the oil paint strokes :P Is Artgem or Painter Deluxes like that? |

Sergenth,
you can add a lot of effect to the brush :
brightness-contrast-saturation or even filters!
when you draw, you can apply effect such as emboss, extrud, etc.... all those effect are availiable with keyboard shortcuts : 1, 2 or 3 etc...
a lot of shorcuts are the same as dpaint use
artgem is a shareware, you can only save in .agp if you are not registered (you can do a screen capture btw) but it's fully fonctionnable..
you can get it at www.rlvision.com it's about 900kb

dines, very cute pic! (I like cute stuff so I'm partial ) The background is a bit problematic though, the color doesn't seem to quite fit and overall it looks sort of like it's made with a filter.
But I don't understand why anyone would want to do truecolor stuff with a Deluxepaint-like program (and I was using DP2e for longer than I'd care...)
It's like saying "Remember when we were so poor we had to eat blood pie every day? Well, now we can afford caviar, but fortunately we found a way to make it taste just like blood pie..." Err, sorry, but that's my feeling about this idea of ArtGem

Saffron,
heh yes caviar i understand that,
in my opinion there is two strong points that make me like this dpaint clone :
* the program is only 600kb, you can bring it on a floppy
* the soft is very fast, and has full support of keyboard shortcuts
maybe another thing is the fact that it only cost 50$, so poor student who don't want to broke the law can buy this one to have a good sleep
(btw i don't earn money on it hehe )
I saw your cool pic, i really like it
the colors reminds me the palette made/bomb uses for background (and some others too)
maybe you have some tips for the sky ? (i just quicky add some blue&white with an airbrush....)

Hi Saffron,
Can't agree with you on the comparison that Deluxe Paint should be like blood pie and PhotoShop like caviar. I know many people think exacly the opposite, it is just that time made Deluxe Paint miss the new and modern features (because of no updates) so people have been forced to swap to PhotoShop to be able to use modern features no mather if they like the interface or not.
Personally I better like the direct/realtime way of working that Deluxe Paint had more than PhotoShops methods of dong things.
I can't see a reason why the excellent way of working that Deluxe Paint had should't work with truecolor and modern features. Actually I know it works, since it is done in ArtGem

With direct/realtime I mean things like you see the brush directly (previewed) while just moving the mouse over the image and when you for example draw a line or circle it is also previewed (exactly as the final result will look) instead of just an inverted line or selection as PhotoShop and all other truecolor programs AFAIK.

ola, I think there's a setting in Photoshop preferences to enable it to use the actual brush shapes as cursors. I don't paint in Photoshop so I don't know for 100% certain... I'm not really sure why you'd want to do that though, maybe if your custom brushes are so pretty that you want to look at their fancy shapes all the time?
Anyway, I guess we'll just have to disagree about the DP interface - I can't think of anything that was particularly nice about it compared to modern graphics programs, except maybe DP2e had funnier bugs...
dines, your two points don't really matter to me either - for one thing, I haven't used any floppies in years (and my cable modem can transfer that 1.4M of data in about 3-4 seconds so what would be the point anymore, perhaps I'm a hardware snob but I don't see the point in sticking with outdated technology)... Secondly, Painter is fast enough for me (honest!! ok, I admit, rendered dab types could be a "bit" faster =)), and I certainly don't feel like learning another set of keyboard shortcuts.
But the price is of course a very good point. Painter costs perhaps something like 800 euros (over here at least), so $50 is quite a bargain... for that good night's sleep
Thanks for the comment on my picture, btw! I'm afraid I don't have any sensible sky tips to offer; if you look at the one in my pic, it's not really realistic at all (no perspective, nonsense lighting). But I don't know, try to find a good balance of dark and light shapes as well as blurry and detailed edges - clouds (at least the ones I've been looking at ) have surprisingly(?) complex lighting and a great amount of detail. Perhaps someone else can offer you more useful advice on painting clouds...

ola,
to preview the brush under photoshop (i use the version 4), just set the capslock on, it will change your cursor
there is another feature to see the size of the brush but never find the right key...
sfr, thanks for your help.
dines.

Hi dines
That is not the same thing, it only shows the outline and not the actual brush (which is very good for pasting brushes with precission)

Saffron,
Do you really think PhotoShops interface is modern. I think it feels & look the opposite, like a macintosh program from the 80's. ArtGem's interface seems a lot more next generation.
