Well all, I have finished (i.e. never want to see again) my first fully digitally painted (no 3d rendering) fantasy pic. Thanks to Lotor and Osk, especially for comments on fire and composition. I am now ready to be ridiculed and shown what is wrong with my finished product.
All comments are appreciated!
-genesequence.
PS. "first fully digitally painted" means "painted background and character", and is meant to distinguish this from my previous work which had no backgrounds (to speak of) or were rendered in 3d apps. Ah, you know what I mean...

On the contrary I think the piece is fantastic. I do however notice one thing that I should have seen in your earlier sketches though.
I am a real fanatic of design and I think your piece could have been designed better. I just don't like the fact that she is in the middle of the page. Also the stalagtites and ...mites all seem to almost mirror images of each other.
The only part that throws this off a little is the cave in the background.
I can tell you have lots of talent and are a good worker. But I think design is what keeps this good piece from being the greatest piece.
Do lots of thumbnails (and I do mean lots, like 30 to 50) of different angles to get the best design for this subject.
One image that I keep picturing in my mind is one of the firelady from further away in the cave at kind of a low perspective seeing this woman made of fire from between several large stalagtites and ...mites ....well which ever ones come up from the bottom of the cave.
Other than my nitpicking I really like the piece.
You might also try putting a little more texture on the rocks closest to the foreground.
You've done great work. Have a cherry coke on me pal.

Hmmm...
It's just a small thingy but maybe you can draw the tites and mites more real, not that "round shaped". Try to look for some pics of tites and mites.
Here's a pic:

Hey...great pic! Good concept and composition. What struck me first was the expression of her face and the cooler colours(i'm Canadian) coming from the rear. I'd have to agree with the others, the weakest point would have to be the stalagtite
structures (but honestly, I can't remember the last time I've been in a cave I think a few more cooler colours, emitting from behind the structures and a little more shadow work would express the harsh lighting.
But again great pic!! Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff.

Gene,
This is a much better gesture than the one I saw before. The girl looks much more motivated and alive. Good going. |

GREAT! .. I love it .. Much better than previous version .. NOW I can feel what she is feeling .. I can feel her madness . and ferocity .. .. she looks so evill .. YES! ... I like .. very unlike your last version .. where she was very calm and lifeless ... I'm glad .you changed it man .. NOW IT really looks like fire woman .. because fire knows NO-fear .. IT JUST BURNS! .. I think any work of art is never finished there is always something to improve upon ... but .. leave this one alone .. move on to your next piece .. and apply everything you learn from this one .

NICE!
the fire looks great! And man, that blue/purple cave in the bg really pulls that space back. nice.
I also feel you really captured her emotion well...in her face and in her neck. It comes togeather really well. nice work!

Lotor: your advice has been invaluable to me, but 30 or 50 thumbnails?! I think that was my mistake. I sketched the image once and impetuously worked it up right away. I agree that the composition is simple to the point of banality, but I am still getting my bearings in the digital world. I'm much more a pencil and paper guy and lack a certain... confidence with my Wacom tablet (even though I've owned it for years!).
LangePisang: a friend of mine pointed out how "Barney-esque" the rocks were, so I gathered some reference...
which seemed to me to look like mine. I guess I could go back and change them...
SonofSun: moi, je suis aussi Canadien.D'ou venez-vous? (I'm from Alberta - crappy French).
Alias & Osk: Thanks for the comments! I now have the motivation to keep trying and not give up on illustration!

Very nice, it's hard to find anything wrong with this pic. But I'll try anyway. The bottom mites, the ones next to the Firewoman maybe could use a little more contrast with regard to the woman. I mean maybe add some different colors in there so that they differ a bit from the ones used in the firewoman. Also make them a little bit darker so that she appears even brighter.

I wuv it!! =) I wish I could draw something like that some day... some day that I get my tablet after 4 months ago that I ordered it, ARGH!!! Anyways, I was just wondaring, how long would you say it took you to make the picture? (i could never pull anything off longer than 5 hours, just want to see if I have any hope in me, LOL). I was thinking, maybe make the fire/girl a bit brighter so it stands out more? cause it kinda fades into the background around half way down and also once you stare about it for about 20 min (which i was doing, man i love it..) you notice that the perspective isn't the best... I would never create 30 thumbnails but two or three... maybe five max, really small sketches just to get the different ideas out of my picture... but thats just me (30 works for some people I guess, 100 might work for you? heh)

That's incredible. I can't find a single thing wrong with this pic. The stalactites and stalagmites may look a bit unrealistic, and the overall setup of the cave may not be very realistic, but I thinkl it creates the perfect atmosphere and looks great. Maybe you feel you need to change some things though, which is completely up to you. (The artist is the one who should be happy with his own work) But I think it looks great. |

Nice picture !
I like it a lot..especially the girl in the middle.
As for comments/critique....
The rocks looks a bit wobbly, not very "real". But, I guess that has been mentioned allready. But, infact, I don't think you should make them to "real" either, it gives a kind of RPG illustration feeling to it with the way they has been done now. Also, it could be nice to change that pink background color or maybe at least make some color transition from the background color to the front, to give a better depth feeling to the picture.
AHm I don't know , anyway, nice picture !
