Ah, here's my pathetic attempt. First time I've used photo reference digitally.

Took about an hour and a half. I should have started with a basic shape (a sketch, perhaps). Instead I just sorta blocked out some colors, without paying attention to real form. It was only after I was almost done that I started really looking at structure. Ah well, anyways.

Wow, there is a lot of great stuff here. I really wasn't expecting to start something like this.

This is actually really good, we all have our first attempts(well not everyone), with the tutorials coming soon, we'll all have something to compare the "right" way to do this, vs. our own way of doing things. Reality should set in at that point.

Very inspiring...

I hated the crapy sketch I started with but I was in a hurry to try out some techniques and see how they turned out so this guy only vaguely resembles the picture. I've never been good with paints (except for painting miniatures) so it will be intersting to see the 'before' and 'after' effect of this tutorial. Lord knows I need all the help I can get.

I just installed painter to see how it works so here is what i found :

(i was under painter5, i am not sure this will work with all versions, maybe we should try with a small script test)

to see the script :
-windows/show object
-then click to the script icone (under the word script)

there is some script included with the soft, you can try mona lisa or other fun stuff...

to release script to easiest way i found :
in the directory of painter there is a file called painter.ssd, you can delete it (it will just reset the script recorded

this file is a text file that you can compress (the original one is about 5mb and 2mb zipped)

Voila! that's all

oh yes, i forget a thing

It's best to start recording the script from the beginning (i mean before choosing a file/new and then chosing the size etc...)

finally, exporting a script can be done at
script/playback script

it's a pure text file and looks like that :

stroke_start
pnt x 9.43 y 154.78 time 3462 prs 0.00
pnt x 6.78 y 155.80 time 3463 prs 0.06
pnt x 6.73 y 157.17 time 3466 prs 0.20
pnt x 10.26 y 157.79 time 3468 prs 0.33
...

it say where the stroke start, etc which tool was used and, with the time setting, it create a kind of replay...

Ok, nevermind, I used geocities.
This took about 45 minutes, I had some problems with getting a there-is-no-tommorow expression in the eyes..... =)

Well, here's a quick try from me. I guess i did a lot of stupid things through the prosess and I found it also very hard to create the eye expression. Oh well..I look really forward to the lecture start, I'm sure I will learn alot from it.

ole how did you get those porprtions so exact, especially when working in 1280x960. Not to mention using a mouse. They are almost identical when side by side. I don't really want to start a flame war but I am a little curious (so shoot me). You either got one really REALLY steady and paitent hand or you painted over it, at least until you got the porportions.

I kept the original photo in its own layer and turned it on and off once in a while to check it I was doing it right. Maybe it looks too much like the original, but I did this only to learn to paint at a large res. I tried to get the outlines correct. This isn't for a contest or commercial use, it was for my personal learning only.

Dammmmn DerPunkt! The eyes in yours are intense... really deep in the skull. They are the most soulful of the bunch so far. Is it the white highlight dots in the eye? The purply tone as the wrinkles of the eylid recess into the socket?

I like all of em as they each capture several aspects of the expression and of course, the more technically obvious lighting and details.

It's fun scrolling fast through this topic to see how the choices of color are all so similar (even synj's with the choice "rebel" colors

Ole, to be honest, to draw the image with the original as underlayer is really a waste. I believe the only way you can learn anything from this would be to find the colors yourself without picking them from the photo, so that you with your own eyes can see where it's more green, blue, pink etc...and try to analyze why . And offcourse draw the face by yourself without using the photo for anything else than to look at.
And size is no exscuse, I did mine in 3000*3500...
But, this is not something you should try to show off with, but to learn.

Sorry, I'm not the one that should tell this, but it is a fact. But, I guess/hope that is much of what we will learn when spooge will start the lecture.

Here is my contribution, I know it's a little late, but I was kind of busy. It took me 45 minutes to complete, and I'm sorry but I didn't keep a progression, next time, here it is!!!!

joachim: I get your point. I'll try to draw something without any reference images next time.
When I get a reference I tend to try to get it to look as much like the original as possible, and I now realize that this is frowned upon by you guys.
I now know I shouldn't have submitted this image, and I'll delete it right away.

I got so inspired by seeing all these entries that I had to do another one. This time around I tried to get the sketch down, so I wouldn't have to change that much while painting. So I did a 10 minute sketch in my sketchbook and colored right over it.
