I know this is a little premature to submit, but I am also going to use this guy in the head tutorial I am writing, seeing as we will all be reading it, I thiught I would attach an assingment, which will involve the guy we will all be painting. Hope this works. I didn't spend anymore than 25 minutes on it, so it is a little rough. Digital is very different than traditional, with that I tend not to start with an underdrawing, for fear of following the lie work too closely. There are a million and one ways to get to this end result. This just happened to be the one way I chose this time... |

"Holy ferking schnit!!" (Kang- the Simpsons)
25 minutes from nothing to pretty damn good likeness! That's awesome! I have to ask though, did you put the photo image in a background layer, or did you actually sketch the bugger from a separate window. Enquiring minds want to know, ya know.

Its very impressive.
But for me you have spoiled the point of it..I would never be able to do that in 25 mins sorry I wouldnt, and im not too sure if many people reading this can either, but now it seems that we have a benchmark to follow and that is that pic you have just posted..hmm I think NOT, I thought the idea for this was for people to learn and not FOR PEOPLE to show off there quick skill..
Your a great painter fred dont get me wrong. I just think you could have waited.
Nuff said

Synj, I love your image. The expression you gave definitely looks more like how the guy feels in the photo. Great likeness.
Genesequence...No I didn't trace the guy. The images were side by side. There is no learning in tracing. Icky Icky...What I am trying to hone in on is color matching by eye. You have to do alot of studyng from life, and I landscape paint and oil figure paint, at least once a week. Since the pallette system on the computer is nothing like really painting, I do everything by eye and hope for the right color and value the first time. I am not building up a spot on my canvas if my color is wrong and I need to change it like paint does, because it is digital paint. So if I pick the wrong color the first time, I can always go back in and change at no expense of my materials. If you can mix real paint, and know your pallette well, photoshop is the fastest paint tool in the west. It still amazes me, that when I saved this image at different intervals, not much time had passed. So I put the time down as well
Zor, no benchmark. This should not be takenas how to do this exercise. This is Spooges class, I just turned my assignment in early, and forgot to read the rules, so I probably got an F. Kinda reminds me of high school...I am agian going to say that this is a perfect image for the head drwaing tutorial. All of you will have toyed with this same image, so you will all hopefully recognize certain points I outline, through association with this Indian man. Then, next exercise I will do, will be like this one, but with a ladies head, and I will point out the differences, since there was discussion and confusion concerning this topic. But not until Mr. Spooge wraps this one up...I am eagerly awaiting his next post... |

I was going to take this in a little different direction than Fred did. Each step (I imagine about 10) would be spaces out a week, and likeness and finish wold not be considered. I would start out slow, and with so much time in between steps, everyone could ponder exactly the reason why things happen the way they do. I would also write a bit about what I am doing. I think Freds first step would be about #3 in my thinking.
i also would not pretend to be able to teach fred anything, not the other advanced artists here. I have not posted much for the beginners here because it is overwhelming once you think about how much must be explained. So that was the point behind this exercise. Really slow, really basic, plenty of time for discussion.
But it has just occurred, I am going away for 6 weeks starting Memorial Day, so I can't be doing this! Fark! I will be able to post (maybe) the first three weeks, but not the last two.
Fred, with this in mind, would you like to take it over from me?
I agree that you should not get ahead of the steps; it is tempting for others to start noodling and not think about the important stuff

Spooge, I agree. I think you and I were typing simultaneously, as I just wrote something too. Believe me, if this was to be done properly, it would not go this way. This first step here would lose the average viewer, or confuse.
As to your question, I would be happy to help out with this. If you have a method to go by with this, email me what your thinking. You post the first step for everyone, if you have it already, and let me know what next. Thank you again, I am quite honored to fill in for you... |

hmm, that first step looks a lot like my kind of first step, Fred.
(all the mistakes come later)
makes me wonder if I'm not starting basic enough, shape/colour wise. |

You have a very Secure way of working, Fred.
getting all the most necesary things in place
first, and moving into smaller details later. I like that. I did it almost the same way, but somehow it came out different.I'm gonna post my picture soon, it was all done very quick. Good work, Fred

Fred:
I just realized how stupid my question from last night was. I really should never drink ever. I hope I didn't offend you. Of course, tracing the image would be of no value as an exercise. I think I'll go back to lurking for a while...

Spooge - you say you would not pretend to be able to teach fred anything, nor the other advanced artists here. Nonsense! Freddy (god, I'm going to start calling him that around the office now!), Francis and I are constantly critiquing each other (brutally at times) and I for one learn a lot from it. I wouldn't be on this board if I didn't think I had a lot to learn from people like you as well as people with less experience but a keen eye nonetheless. (and yes, you can take this as a shameless plea for you to give me some feedback on my earlier posted pic )
And in Freddy's defence, I don't think he was trying to show off how fast he is, just to give a benchmark for how you should be working your process. Take more or less time (god knows I'll be taking more!) but keeping this in mind may keep you from 'noodling' too early. And no, he's not kidding about the time. He did this during work hours, so if he'd taken any longer I would have gotten on his case ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/wink.gif) |

I don't understand. I thought we were all doing this a little at a time before spooge went first? Why's everyone done already? How do you learn anything if you're finnished before the lesson? Do you guys expect spooge to give you tips on your finnished work while us real new people are left behind? I hope this doesn't discourage spooge. |

everyone posting pics: bravo! great stuff guys. makes me realize how fat of a head i gave my guy.
spooge: no it won't, dude. hehehe i already retain a couple different styles. realism is still something I am going to be needing to do anyhow since i texture all my 3D stuff. i promise I won't dive in too deep

A software feature i was thinking about was the one you can find in aura-tvpaint and painter,
it can record all your mouse move and click, etc, so in fact you can save the making of your pic which can be replayed in real time .
what guys did think about this....?

I am still figuring painter out...It has a function that will record all your brushwork? Does it record the progress in frames, does it save out a gif after each move? How does this work? I would love to use it for tutorials...
Nori-this is just a post for us eager beavers...the lessons are still coming...so don't worry about anyone getting ahead. This isn't going to affect the lesson. |

Um... I'm not quite clear on how this thing is going to go, exactly, and I felt like painting this, so I'll post what I have. Looks like this took me about an hour.
I like: Colour matching, somewhat. A little anyway.
Expression, although I think he looks a bit more afraid than in the original.
Dislike: Messiness.
I made the face too wide, and other mistakes like that.

I really felt like painting this one. And I haven't painted anything in ages, just sketching, sketching, and more sketching. well here is my pathetic attempt which took about an hour:
