The most important thing I can suggest to you regarding the portrait, is not to focus on putting in that much detail (eyes, lashes etc.) in this stage of the painting. Details should only come after you have chiseled away at the blank canvas and established the recognizable form of a face. Treat the face as shapes that receive light according to their relative postions from it. Get that form correct, then you can basically fill in the rest as if it were a puzzle. |
