Brain,
Something does not look correct about the neck... I think there needs to be some shading coming from the saber. Other than that it looks pretty cool. Thumbs up!

mr. spooge. I hope you found no insult in my reply. I was inspired by all the good things you and moze write to encourage people, and help them. That is really needed. I just felt, after reading that lotor page about frazetta and the basics, that I would chime in and also express any helpful tips I can, I teach art, its in my blood and I can't escape it. One question not relevant to any of this, what ever encouraged you to use brushes with pattern shapes rather than the stock circular brushes.? I see the photographic blend in the background elements, but I am curious as to this thought process. I have tried them a bit, but only after seeing the effects you have acheived with them.
As for the repaint of the Jedi image, the neck needs the pit of the neck indicated, or the sterno m. muscle strapping into the pit of the neck. With out at least a hint of both sides of the neck their in the image, if you show one of the sides, the neck will not properly look adhered to the body. Also a bit of a cast shadow to puu the chin out off the neck a bit more would help. But you have definitely taken it in the right direction. |

Oh, no Fred, I really appreciate what you said. Some others said I was evil or something. I don't understand.
Yeah, the number of things whacked in my drawing... Please feel free to show me what you had in mind with the sternomastoid. I don't think a cast shadow is called for given the lighting. I wanted a point source from the viewer. We are seeing the bottom plane of the jaw head on. Umm I got it... The cylinder of the neck is not indicated-no wrap off in value.
I am not sure what prompted me to start using other than the default brushes (which I use a lot). I find fighting the slickness and mechanical nature of the digital tools calls for some ingenuity sometimes. |

Ah, my misunderstanding. I should have written brain in front of the jedi comments. I didn't have any on your piece. So Brain, these were for you...
I don't want this to come off as fannish sounding, but over the past few months I have been roaming the web in search of artists who use photoshop as an art medium, and take it one step beyond. Many people refered me to your site. I was blown away. The stuff was pretty much what I was looking for in terms of inspiration.
I took a couple pieces into photoshop, and scanned them to look at the technique. And I swear, and I am sure you've mentioned this somewhere, but I could be wrong, I see bits of photos in them. But the perspective is on, and the values are on. Then it looks like you hit some airbrush over it, and the surrounding parts to blend them out. Am I wrong about this? There is nothing wrong with that, in fact, after seeing Star Wars Episode 1, I got to trying to paint photos and rough brush strokes together. I am just trying to put an end to a long puzzling question that has been rattling away at me for some time now.
And one more and next time it wont be these kinds of questions, it will be more art related...Did you start off matte painting with the traditional methods, or did you start with it digitally? You have such traditional disciplines and you speak of and show notes on Sargent, being the god father of paint...and do you still weild a brush anymore?
Again, kudos to your work. It is certainly inspirational, and full of life...take it easy...

I know mine isn't even a third time as good, but that's why I'd like some comments on it
I don't want to push myself forward or anything, osrry if it sounds like this, I only want a few suggestions
BTW, Brain, I thinkit would improve your pic drastically if you made the white part of the saber thinner, and/or the glowing green part wiedr...

Well, I think that guy has to be more though 'n rough, it looks like he is a guy who is very cute and sweet and would never hurt a fly. Such a guy who visit his grandmother every weekend...(aaargh!!)
Maybe you should take Micke's example as a example for the next time. Or for now, but I think that'll be too hard to change the "whole" picture...

I think the robe and a lot of the
shadows in the face could be much sharper and "edgier"
in certain areas. It looks a bit too
smooth. the lighting could be a bit more
dramatic too(darker for example).
it looks better
