http://www.rivenguild.com/myst3exile/conceptdrawings/conceptdrawings.html Here is a link to where I have three photoshop paintings. The three images of organic stuff. And the little creature design. I will get more digital stuff up in the near future. Till then, here is another gouache image, it was asked of...I don't sign my concept work so I have to point them out. Check out Tsai's art, Francis kicks ass. Not many originals like he...He did all the techy stuff...and anticz animated the trailer stuff if you happen to venture over and check it out...many shouts to anticz and francis
The original size is 16" x 20" . It took about 5 hours to complete...
rip it up, and have a great day... |

I have to finish my props or I wont feel ggod about this...On that links page, the other designer kicking ass is Phil Saunders, aka wacomonkey...He is on par with Joe Johnston and Ralph Mcquarrie. But the knob doesn't have a website yet, he needs one. He did the sail barge in the canyon image. Hats off to he, Francis, and Anticz you guys are the shit...Sorry, I just love good quality stuff... |

Great work Fred.
A question about Presto, do you guys all work there as full timers or freelancers?? I ask cause I'm looking to redirect my career towards that kind of work. Right now I work in the NY area in the graphic design field as an illustrator. (stay away, stay far away) I am just curious how the conceptual end works, relating to film and gaming. I am so smothered by the sea of designers that I work with, it's rare that I get to hear what it's like from the trenches of a real art job!!!
How does the industry go about hiring illustrators???? Do employers look for freelance positions mainly, or are there staff positions available????
later

We're all full time employees. The designer positions are difficult to describe, since much of that work (at least at Presto) is very open ended and undefined. As a result, there seems to be less of an established path for this type of job. If you're interested, I've got an account of how I got where I am at my site.
Plus, we're still looking for another conceptual designer, so if you're really interested, you should get a portfolio together and send it in.

Damn! I'm still in school. Less than a year to go...but it feels like forever. I'm putting together a print portfolio, but there's been talk of putting traditional artwork on a CD-ROM. Do you guys prefer looking at real samples, or can they be digital? |

Francis, I have seen your site before, and I think you have some excellent stuff, thanks for the reply.
As far as sending some work does it have to specifically pertain to conceptual design???? I have some, but not a considerable amount. My portfolio consists of mostly high end retouching, product illustration, and things relating to print. I'm working on putting together a more focused book, but those damn bills keep getting in the way, so I have to do the paying stuff.
If you want to take a look at some things I have recently posted, here are a few links. It's not much, but when time allows I'll put up more.

Great stuff! Now I have one more thing to look forward to, Myst III.
The design work is incredible. Kudos. It's not often we get to sit around and gawk at someone's work online, but it's one of our favorite past times.

Fred and Francis,
Sorry, I'm jumping over here from the other post.
Congrats on getting Myst III. You're work so far is beautiful. Hope you guys come out with a book at the end.
Fred, I'm ordering the Richard Schmid book you recommended. Schmid rocks! Anyway, thanks for that. |

Francis,
What would you suggest someone who wants to go into what you are doing learns or needs to know? What kind of classes to take in school and what to spend a lot of time working on. I'm really good with Adobe, but I have never really messed with a 3D program (could you recemined one?) |
