GAH! I am an idiot!

See what I mean about the attention span?

One thing you might do is to break down practicing your techniques into separate projects. Something like the following:

  • Quick Gesture - basic pose & motion of character - no details - just focusing on weight/balance/pose/gestures...(life drawing really helps with this!!)
  • Lighting/Shadows - practice drawing simple objects, but focusing on getting the lighting and shadows just right.
  • Color - focus on whatever you're comfortable with to combine colors that look pleasing.
  • Texture/Details - take something like a close-up of, say, a character's nose or hand - and then detail the heck out of it!
  • Combination! - Try combining some or all of these practice techniques gradually... and eventually you'll develop enough patience to play longer and longer with each picture...
Know what I mean, Vern?

PS: Oh yeah - and I like the pic!

Well, judging from your other work, you definitely have enough discipline to finish a detailed picture. I just got a drawing tablet and have the same sort of problem. It's so easy and slick to sketch on the computer that it's hard stay with one drawing for very long. You never run out of ink, or paint, or paper.

kurisu - very true; all those exercises are time well spent. I just wish I had the spare time to be disciplined about doing them. What ends up happening usually is I draw all day on the job, and then at lunch I want to do something completely opposite. So I get stuff like darth and spidey, which seem very random and undisciplined.

kos, cos, sedone - thank you.

fred - har har.

Another quickie. Please excuse my short attention span with regard to these drawings. I post them after they've exceeded my attention span. Maybe someday I can actually do a complete painting with foreground, background, middle ground and symbolism. Until then, I sketch and move on.
