This is my first attempt at sketching the character art with a pencil then going over it with ink. I normally just draw with a pen.
How'd I do? What could I do to make it better? (I know the background sucks big, I did it in like 2 minutes with PShop)

You should probably do the outline removal BEFORE you flatten the image. If you still have the .PSD, you should smudge out the black lines (maybe as Dhab does it) so it doesn't end up smudging your colors out too.

I know this is rushed, but is this heading in the right direction?

You should change your line weight in certain areas. Such as the line on the underside of the arm should be thicker than the line on the top of the arm. This gives the illusion of weight.
Using tracing paper helps then scan it into your computer.
I also use a mirror or photo reference so I can make sure my anatomy looks good.
Look at Frank Frazetta's work and you will see a guy that knows his anatomy.
Keep working hard dude

I'd suggest getting rid of the thick black lines and blending your colors more.

In getting rid of the black lines, would I use the color of the shade/hightlight or just a thinner black line?

Hey Skidvis;

I thought I'd take a crack at your sketch. I'm not a painter, I'm an animator, but I thought I'd try to bring some drawing tips to it.

Start by dropping the pen and not picking it up again for awhile.

Your basic pose is pretty good, it's a good silhouette and fairly dynamic. My first note would be to dump the background altogether; it doesn't really add anything.

Removing the background will allow you to focus on the figure and give you some freedom in establishing the best angle.

I usually start with thumbnail sketches. Starting small forces you to leave out the detail and focus on the pose. You can step back more easily and get a good look at the silhouette.

I started with your basic pose, then adjusted it. I ended up liking the third thumb best, even though it differs from your original pose slightly.

Next, I usually scan the drawing and blow it up to get a better look at it. In this case, however, I made small variations from the thumbnail, so I just used it as reference.

The next step is more difficult. I highly recommend some life drawing and some anatomy studies. I'm a little rusty myself. I've been busy with animation, and this type of comic book style drawing usually takes a little more work in the detail so I left it sketchy.

It's not as good as I would like, but you get a basic idea of what I was going for.

Let me know what you think

Wow.. Excellent pointers and awesome sketch!
I just bought a book called dynamic figure drawing. It has a cool way to see the human body in shapes. Thanks for your pointers, I'll be sure to use them and drop the pen for a while (except for inking, right?).
Maybe in a little bit of time I'll be as good as you are at putting my deas onto the sketchpad.

Hey Skidvis go try doing some drawings on some of the online drawing/chat boards either on Synj's page or some where else. There you will quickly learn about line wieght and and shadow. Sketching forms quickly and the shapes that make up the body. I've learnt a lot that way.
www.synj.net is where you'll find one.

But beware of the dreaded anon scribbilers they're cunts. They hop in, scribble on your drawing and hop out. But what the hell, you just start another. So you learn to sketch quick.

Cya there maybe, don't forget to enter you name in the name box and press enter thou. Else I'll treat you like an anon scribbler.

Hey Skid;

I'm glad you liked the pointers.

My opinion about inking is this: inking is an artform unto itself, and takes as much discipline and practice to learn as illustration. At this point in your skill level, I would recommend focusing on one or the other.

It would be a good idea to think about line weight and shadows, tho'. I feel lucky not to have to worry about that stuff for the most part in animation, since it was always difficult for me. But it's good to know it and study it.

And don't just use books. Get your sketchpad out into the sunlight and draw some real live people.

Just my $.02
