well i use PSP6 but i guess i gotta get used to photoshop... PSP 4.0 was not so good i must say but virsions 5.0 and 6.0 are much better...indeed Win98 is really a virus in a way... im lucky to still have 95 on this comp...

I totally agree with Loki, PS 4.0 is the one I use too. I try 5.0 every now and then, but it is so slow I always go back to 4.

I'm a Photoshop 5.5 junkie all the way..but no amount of airbrushing, dodging, burning or anything else can save a shitty drawing. If you want to be good, build up the core drawing skills. Get some figure drawing and anatomy under your belt and color theory is also helpful. Although, trying to draw anatomy through the fuzzy lines on the scrambled spice channel has made for some freaky lookin' chicks. |

"Photoshop is the real tool for real artists". Damn, Adobe should pay me for saying that. |

PS 4.0 is the one I use - 5.0 and 5.5 have a marginal improvement for painting burt are sooo much slower and clunkier. 4.0 has got everything I need and is superquick too - especially when it comes to brushes. It's like a chopper ...
Also - I know people love the history function - but it's eating up a lot of memory and slows things down too. I've never really needed more than one undo-step - considering I started out working on a machine that had NO undo function ...

After splurging on several items including my 4x5 Intuos tablet I am forced to use a hacked PSP 5.0 shareware version (not hard to keep going). |

Here's my two cents.
I don't know if this is a cross platform thing for those PC users out there (I'm on MAC), but when I had the problem with PSHOP 5.5 being slow, myself and a co-worker researched what could be the problem, and we came across a plug-in that enables the use of PSHOP 5.5's velocity engine. The plug-in is called Altivec. Now this may be a psychological convincing on my part, but I think it works great, I trashed my copies of 4.0 and 5.0 along time ago.
Just a suggestion. |

hmm, after reading above well mainly Loki's comments. - I personally use PS 5.5 and found this to be a LOT faster than ver 4.0, as long as you set the mem usage up correctly (in prefs), 5.5 has many new features that 4 cant offer and has better use and feel overall I think.. - after working with 5.5 for so long when I see 4.0 I think ewwwww..
Dont slag me for saying that its my own opinion.. - but to sound like gerry springger, "Final thought" Why worry about what others are using? - at the end of the day art has to come from within and not the program your using.. - so just try as many as you can, and the one that just "works" well for you stick with..

as for the new 'features': which of them do you really need as a digital artist (i know the word is loaded!).. not as a webdesigner...?

erm nope Im not kidding....I for one, am so picky about speed.. I have to have the best and latest processor and heape of RAM installed just so I can push those pixels around faster. but since I had 5.5, to me it seemed to have been a lot more stable and faster. not sure if this is fact or not, but it just is, and seems that way..maybee the 300+ meg of ram helps, so dont quote me on it or anything..in fact this is bad as I cant even explain in words what I mean.. - it just feels better more serious, more subtle and more friendly that ver 4.0..weird huh? yeah i know
Pity there is no real way of benchmarking the two of them..Ah well. nevermind. as Long as you like what your using and I like what im doing, then thats the main thing..
Oh and the new features, are more or less of a novelty, such as the "history applet" this is so usefull for me, as u can track everything you do (like a mini undo, best thing is it saves the history with the PSD, so for example, you can say apply a new layer with a hue effect and then add colour and then blend or burn orr whatever.. to create a nice effect.. - but then weeks later you want to create the same effect just dont knwo how? - well u can then just look at teh history and find out how. - that sort of thing (this does not apply to everyone of course) just is usefull for the people that can see its advantages. - also in 5.5 has better support for brushes and sizes and the like.. and of course web stuff (but who cares about web stuff.. right?) joke
Anwyays.. bottom line is, does it matter what one is better or faster or whatever? - if you happen to be able to produce the same results in yoru final drawing wiuth both, in the same amount of time.. then who cares.
