I am a liddle weird I guess and I collect comics. My two faver artists are Joseph Michael Linsner (Dawn) and Michael Turner (early Witchblade and Fathom). Lotsa people I have talked to think that i shouldn't be wasting my time liking the comic art because they think comic artists are the bottom feeders of the art world. (exact words) I gto kinda pissed because I really respect both those artists work. See, I like "real" art too-
Luis Royo Borris Vallejo...... etc.. but it is wrong to like comic artists?
So I guess the Q I want all your opinions on is: are comic artists artists?
~Dawn~
I THINK THEY ARE

holy hell if comic books arent art, then i guess ive wasted the last 7 of drawing wanting to become a comic artist. It is infintely harder then it looks at first glance, the perspectives, characters, emotions in their faces... you have to draw one page a day atleast to get your work in on time.. if a comic book artist isnt a true artist, i dunno what is. heres a quick bit of my work http://home1.gte.net/capnpyro

That's the stupidest bullshit i've ever heard. Comic artists, in my opinion, are waaay up there on the art world chart. There's no such thing as "real" art, does your friend know what art means?
art n 1: the products of human creativity
If comic art isn't a product of human creativity then what is?
Those 'lotsa people' you've talked to don't know what they're talking about. Who do you think has more creativity or talent? A guy who paints a big flower on a canvas or someone like Todd Macfarlane who creates fucking incredible images that tell a story, pages of them, thousands of them.
BLahHH!

in my opinion, like anything else there's a range. no doubt there are a lot of people out there churning out formulaic crap to meet the monthly deadline, and not really creating anything worth looking at. (i've seen many examples)
on the other hand, there are some real artists working on comic books out there, who have great ideas, and work at telling stories about breaking some ground with graphic art.
which category a person fits in depends on who you asks. i see no black & white, nothing but greys... |

Of course comic artists are artists... Many of them are exceptionally talented, but also too many of them waste their time on superheroes. (I don't particularly hate superhero comics, but the genre is stuffed with too many silly conventions for me to really enjoy.)

WO WO WO WO! Dont get angry at me! I think comic artists are amazing.. well some of them. I know all the hard work put in to it. And I also dont really like superhero ones either. NO offense to anyone.
And I dont think my friend is too open minded about this shit. I think comic artists are better than most types of art eg the sunflower on a canvas......

Nobody's angry at you... About the sunflower paintings, it depends - sure, if someone's doing them today it might not amount to much. On the other hand I don't think anyone would claim Van Gogh and Czanne weren't exceptionally important just because their motifs were so "ordinary".
(btw I hope you weren't serious about Royo and Vallejo representing the so-called "real art"?)

Why in the hell would they not be artists? Very strange question IMHO. Artists come from all kinds of genre's. I feel better now.

Hehe...you're gonna get some pretty emotion-filled responses from Sc00p, Darkmo0n, and lots of other comic artists.
But yes, they are artists. I absolutely love the comic genre; it has that vibrant, different approach to the world.

Of course they are artists. There are many different types of artists, and a comic book artist would be a subcategory of the more generalized term artist. I've heard people say comics are not art, but they are thinking in terms of so-called fine art, again another genre.
sfr: I'm with you in hoping he's not serious about his choices to represent "real art".
And what the hell is "real art" anway?
It all comes down to opinions, so I guess this is just a poll post. |

It all depends.. I myself am somewhat of a comic artist and I consider myself an artist. However, if I was submitting to a real art gallery say in NY. I don't think my rendition of the Green Lantern would be very marketable. So, to the gallery and the market I'm not an artist, because its not considered real art to them. Basically, it depends on who you are showing your art to. If that makes sense.

OH MY GOD! i have to re write that whole damn message cause i put in the wrong password!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
dawn, i wrote you like a huge 500 word message i swear but i cant stand to write it again! it was so heartfelt! it was deep! it ... hmm ill just write a differnt one...
of course comic artist are artist! do you know, most comic artist can draw realism or the sunflowers! or.. well anything they want! and we *if i may say we?* choose to draw the big breasted babes and the boys in spandex!! because there is no limits! Sure! draw a girl with the waist the size of my wrist and the breasts the size of watermellons! GREAT! PRAISE THE ARTIST! *cough joe mad cough* imaginative! wonderful! fun as hell to draw!
your friend needs an attitude check, or to do sum research! he needs a good ass kicking... hey you know, Alpha Flight lives down the road from me... course.. i think id Rather make some calls, ill send JLA after him... yeah... then he'll be sorry... BWAHAHAHAHAHA GET YOUR KRYPTONITE BUDDY!
had he seen the work in dawn? because thats pretty realistic, its got some cool religious debates in their too... bah and tell him, it usually takes 3 or more artist to make one book! so if he comes up with the argument "its just cartoons, they are so easy to draw, anyone can do it blah blah lbah" yeah right, if he already gave you that argument im sending young justice with teh JLA too.. ass kicking for him!...
this one wasnt as heart fel as the other one... the other one had more smilies... i hope it works just as well....
so the answer is, OF COURSE COMIC ARTISTS ARE ARTISTS! it just depends on the taste, hell i know people who think the mona lisa is just some chick in a painting, then when others see her as a beautiful heartfelt painting where her eyes follow you and her lopsided grin makes you stare for hours wondering, why is she smiling? do i have spiniach in my teeth? what? WHAT? WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT LISA! ....

Of course comic artists are artists. Like in any genre or craft, comic artists vary in skill level from person to person. Some are phenomenally good, while others are attrociously bad. |

It ain't my place to say who's an artist and who isn't. I think some comic book artists do great stuff. Others do shit. Sorry, but Michael Turner does shit. :P I get the idea that half of these guys these days have never actually seen a grown woman naked, what with the 56FF breasts and the 13" waists and 6' legs. I really really like Adam Hughes, Alan Davis, Kevin Nowlan, Joe Quesada's old stuff... But that's all personal opinion anyway.
Sure, comic art can be art just as much as anything else.
By the way, my choices for "real art" would've been a little more....uh....classic.

Hey, if it's art to put goldfishes in mixers (some danish guy actually did that) then I guess my shitty underwear is art too... And comics definitely are!!! |

Ok let me add my babble here too:
My definition of serious art is, when you try to tell the viewer (in this case of visual art) something through your picture. When you want to create an deeper emotion in the viewer.
I think pure ability to draw shapes is not serious art.. at least not according to my definition. To draw a scene that gives an emotional impression however is s-art.
the last pic of the TV-picture chain game is a good example for what I call s-art.
So don't think eye candy is s-art all the time.
I love larry elmore, clyde caldwell etc. etc. but they draw fiction most of the time and they draw (not all the time) without some inner meaning to the viewer. So this is ART but not "serious art" like van gogh did for example.
Don't kill me because I am not swimming with the stream here but Comic Artist are sure artist (some at least) but most of them are no "serious artists" according to the definition given above.
I'm using "serious" because of my lack for another better fitting word. So I don't take "less serious" art as being inferior-- its just different
BTW. Comic is just a style of drawing, so it says nothing about the content of the picture.
