I dunno why i post my pathetic, incomplete pictures but... right now it looks like its cartoon-style, and i wanna make it look more realistic, maybe add some texture to the skin and stuff, but i never did that before, can anyone help me? (also other feedback would be great)

Forgive my friend Shizo. He's a little... you know, 'twisted brained'. He should be in a mental hospital right now back in Russia. Did you know that he has a plan for killing Mr. Putin ? Oops, sorry Shizo, it just slipped out of my mouth.
Anyway, what you need to add realism to your alien is just shadows n hilites. Imagine a light source then hilite what's facing it and shade whats not. If the light source is very bright, use harsh hilites n shading. If it's dim, use mild hilites n shading.
Easy enuff concept, huh ?

This is a cute character Got a name for it?
As to your question...If you can see the shape in your mind but still having hard time applying the correct shading, then you can use programs such as ZBrush to quickly model the object and apply the appropriate shading.

Here is a simple shading example...

You are not alone...

Is that helpful to you?

ZBrush is a painting program for the PC (and shortly Mac) that has 3D in it.

The following images were created with it...

"flower" or "Iron Maiden" or "Faces" or "Jabble" or "Zetrus Robo" or "Bouhan" ...and of course the Gallery 2000 has a few images by Pixelator in it.

I think it's a very cool program

-kurisu

For still more ZBrush pics, visit my site at www.senntient.com. All icons were created with it, too!

since this is turning alot into a ZBRUSH thread... i got a question, my guide, kurisu, wasn't on lalty so i'll ask here.. When you great an object, and you go to EDIT (like a sphere or something) and then it lets you scale/rotate/edit and so on, when you edit, it lets you modify the object and stuff by stretching some parts and stuff like that, but get you push stuff in? cause i was only able to pull out... (btw, i got the demo only...)

Hiya Shadow

I'll be posting a ZBrush tutorial within the next few weeks on my site, and I'll try to go over a lot of the basic stuff, but for now...

When in Edit mode, you have 2 modes of sculpting your objects...

  1. Using the 'Pointer' icon (hotkey=Q), you can paint with a +/- Depth value (in the Transform group) (set Depth=0 to just paint color - after you set your object to 'Colorize' in Tools/Modifiers/Image).
  2. Using the 'Move' icon (hotkey=W), you can pull/stretch parts (see below)

Hope this helps a little!

-k (razed lunatic)
