No offense but.. ick. The image is kinda grainy. I'm not sure if that is the style you were aiming for, but it just makes the site more confusing. You shouldn't have to explain how to use the site.

well sorry to break this to you, bob, but i have seen alot of stuff like this in my time. web pages, pages in books, cd covers, comic books and game(s).

the whole thing looks like you've ran it through a shitty scanner. do something about that. and the navigation is a bit annoying. do the mouseover pictures preload? they seem to be taking their good time displaying..

I don't mind this style at all, nor the fact that it is grainy. Maybe it was burnt and sat there for a real long time. I haven't been overexposed to this type of design so for me, it's rather neat.

Thanks, all.

Not nessecarily on alphabetical or order of appearance :

1. It's grainy on purpose. On lower resolutions (800x600, 1024) this might be amplified by a bad graphics card.

2. I like unorthodox navigation. The standard 'menu goes in the left bar' kind of sites make me sick.

3. Faust - show me the sites! i love this shit!

4. I ran dirty and old shit through a top-quality industrial level scanner at my work. The look is on purpose.

5. The mouseovers preload. There also is a button called 'source' on your browser to answer that question.

6. Synj, that's the idea. It sat there, stuffed away under a leaking old refrigerator, for 5 years until i uploaded it

Spitfire - very cool!

I like the "texture" a lot. Many things out there look 'polished,' and the dirty, dithered, etc. quality is great!

My opinion about interface is "I like it when I know where I'm going to go before I click on something."

To beat a dead horse and make myself clear... Let's say someone had "The Blue Room, The Red Room and The Green Room..." for example. I love themes - and I'd love it even more if it was clear what each 'room' was about... as opposed to just blue, red, and green... what do they all mean?!

I know you haven't linked the 'TYPE, -5V, +5V and GND buttons yet, but what information will they link to? Will there be any pop-up text to explain? Or do you want it to necessitate exploring to learn what each means?

Good job d00d!

-k (inda kool, uh huh huh)

PS: The thumbnail .jpg's in the design link didn't display for me in IE

PPS: I dig that dragonfly - looks dead on the page - now *that's* serenity!!!

I have to agree with Faust on this one. I've seen this in larger and larger amounts. Granted, it is deemed "cutting edge" to many because it breaks away from conventional site design and placement of links. The only thing that makes this a bit different is the rougher appearance. Most I've seen go the technical futuristic approach, complete with cool dealies that follow your mouse around the page and dry-hump it when you stop.
I like the fact you're thinking out of the box on web design. And don't mind faust, he's just a bitter old man :P (We still love you faust!)

Kur : by taking your heading away on the interface, you leave the visitor in the dark on where he/she's going to. That way people truly explore your site rather than skipping the content and going for the guestbook immediately

Salty : Im under the impression that many people relate this to the 'lockjaw' style (not that they invented it, but they made it big). My approach is quite different in that i do not seek to combine a clean and sterile 'thin-black-line-on-big-white-background' with messy looking stuff. This design is more inspired by CD-covers made by people such as Aaron Turner, Jacob Bannon and the NowOrNeverRecords guy whose name i forgot.

From a webdesign POV the only similar style i have seen is the design from Frank Kolodziej. And still this is quite different in that i take the 'dirt' a bit further.

Again, i'd like people to actually point out (A href= hyperlink style) similar sites.

I like the design too, sorta. They way the gfx blend with the background leaves a lot to be desired however. I also disliked having to move my mouse all over the place to see if there was anything behind the initial page.

The thumbnails dont seem to load. The thumbnail borders are tacky.

I hate target="blank". Let me open my own damn windows . Use the existing window or use a popup (that's formatted for the pic). Either way, having the image on a formatted htm file looks more 'professional'.

Not really, they press "back" instead.

Maybe faustgfx was more put off by your arrogance than by the actual page. I know I certainly am. Food for thought.

Regards.

p.s. my page is similar, but more orthodox in its "standard 'menu goes in the left bar' kind" that makes you so ill.

Argh please dont tell me that the img's background color doesnt match the pages background color on your screen. *shivers* i hate when that happens.

Oh...ehhh...arrogance? me? I simply haven't seen anything like this before on the web but if im wrong i'd like to hear (read : SEE)it...

No, they match. But... well it's difficult to explain. It looks like using the "color range" tool in photoshop, and deleting the selection. It just doesn't go with the rest of the "grungy" design. Shrug.

I've seen the 'david carson & neville brody'
style a zillion times on webpages, BUT that
does not mean this site is bad. hehe

It's good, and way better then most design
wannabe sites. Maybe it needs a bit of
overall tweaking, but don't f*ck with the
colors, cuz making it more userfriendly harms
the feeling.

A good book to buy (if you like design 'art')
is -> Trigger by Robert Klanten.
Amazon : http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/3931126218/o/qid=956322564/sr=8-2/ref=aps_sr_b_1_2/104-5154060-9398855 (of je haalt 'm bij abc)

A collection of modern avantgarde graphics
designers (most of them 100% non digital).

Chumps : Thank god I now know what you are talking about. It is because the white stuff is a scan of a torn paper wrapping whose brightness/contrast i upped a bit. If i hadn't done that, it would've been kind of a low-contrast mess.

Faust : Which scene? I've cruised everything hirez-webdesign related in the past 4 years and i still haven't found anything similar. C'mon, probable cause isn't enough. I want hard evidence

Assa - thanks for the link! I'll be sure to check the book out. And..err.. who are 'david carson & neville brody'? Point me to some URL's! /me wanna seeeeeh!

Thx all for the feedback so far.

Spitfire, I do like you webpage very much, especially because it is 'out of the ordinary', the thing you did with the electric diagram is evenso neat.

Though, as I mentioned before, it isn't very ergonomic and interface correct, It surely is artistic correct , cool , and different..

I like the style..

spitfire :

You do NOT know David Carson or Neville Brody?
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh shame on you hehe.. Those guys
are very known and respected gfx designers.
Brody founded 'face' magazine around +- 1980
a brittish punk influenced lifestyle magazine
with superb typhography (cuz he's a known
font designer too, see/buy his fonts at
Emigre or ITC). Co-Founder of the annual
Fuse festival (about design and fruit that
fitts that catagory).

David Carson is a self made graphic designer
a.k.a design GOD, founder of the Ray Gun
magazine. His style is blurry, dark (copy
machine like) with hard edges and a nice
overall composition. Nowadays he's working
on motion design related projects with the
people of Manhattan Transfer (design
company).

bla bla that's it

Yes indeed, get all david carson books (like
me) he does HQ photography stuff to.
Esp. the hard to get Emigre nummero 27 (which
is 100% dedicated to and designed by David)
is worth every single coin.

People with a SF art fetish, or my dear
friend Danny Gee should skip his books haha.
It's not really d.a forum lovers material!
