HOW DO YOU DRAW HAIR?!?!?!
I know that's not right to ask you that (the proper answer would take a 15 pages tutorial...) But I am trying to give hair the effect you do AND I'M GOING NUTS!!!!
I will probably figure it all by myself someday, I'm only 16 and I won't stop practicing anytime soon!!!
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!
And I'm dying for this new tutorial named HAIR!

uh...i'll get back to you on this one. There isn't really an easy way out of making believable hair (that i know of). I'll try to make up some quick images showing a way i use soon. |

Hey Happy Meal, why don't you show us the picture? If you don't have any web space, and need a place to put it then send it to me and I will put it on my space so people can give you some feedback if you want. Later!

This is an intersting Hair tutorial by Adobe's own, Russell Brown. Check it out.
Although the technique is applied to a photograph, i'm sure you can apply the same technique elsewhere.

Hey guys. Here is Happy Meal's picture. it is quite large, but shouldn't take long to donwload.
I will post a link to it instead of putting it on this post because it is too big. http://members.home.net/jerridb/Elfman.JPG
(just copy and paste the url, the UBB code isn't working)
Please give Happy meal some feedback!

I'm no graphic god, seeing as how I've only been doing CG art since late summer. The only example of hair I have is a cartoonish pic of a friend of mine I did... the hair isn't great, and I need alot more practise, but <shrugs> what the hell..
Original Paper Sketch http://nightlords.vortexq.com/pictures/Roach/toon_erin.jpg
Finished Pic http://nightlords.vortexq.com/pictures/Roach/toon_erin1.jpg
I started with a regular brown. Sounds wierd from blonde hair, but it worked. I then dodged it up to white, using my primitive knowledge of how light is reflected. Photos help a lot. I then airbrushed 3-4 shades of yellow. Some touching up with the smudge, dodge, and burn tools, and TADA! The hair was the hardest part of the image, actually, took about the same amount of time as the rest of the pic. Looking back, It could've used some more definition of the strands... oh well. Next time.

It won't do what you want because you can't use HTML tags on this board. You have got to use UBB Code. When you post a message, in the box where you write it look to the left and click on the "*UBB Code is ON*" link.
That will explain it all.

I've found that you should first sketch out the basic shapes of the hair. The individual strands follow certain patterns, which, of course, vary individually. Then shade the hair as it were a big, soft mass. Don't put any highlights or dark shadows in yet, though. Using a smaller, soft brush and the dudge/burn tools, draw out the strands, and when you need to sharpen them, move down to a smaller brush.
The problem with this is, that it can be easy to overdo, and if you define too many individual strands of hair, you'll end up with greasy hair.
here's a pic I did with this technique: http://www.redrival.com/affected/content/img/argh.jpg
People have liked the hair, though I'm not completely satisfied with it myself. |

Happy Meal** Your pic looks nice..... although it is extremely huge in size.... I am running 1280X1040 and it still wouldnt fit on my screen !!
Turbo**
Looks good. Although, I think the sketch lines on the final pic were a bit crooked... or .... grr...... i dunno how to put it but they didnt look defined. I have that problem too... my tablet just doesnt feel like .5mm lead on a blank piece of paper... =)
Good work guys.
BTW = I have been sketching up these types of charecters for weeks... And then these Bungie people... (HALO) decided to make a game with the same type of sketches ! LOL!
But anyways, what do you people think ? It is for a project in school, but the screenshot they had at the website was way better than any pose i could come up with.

The main technique to draw hair is the dodge/burn tools with the smallest brush and about 60% pressure. Start with a flat, fairly dark color, and just run the dodge/burn tool over it. Every line is a strand.=)
Then use the airbrush set to 'lightnen', smallest brush and about 20-25% pressure to do any other desired highlights and hairs that stick out. |

Here is what I can conclude (roughly) from how dhab does the hair on his pics:
The tekken picture was basicly just a lot of brush strokes from what I can tell. The eclipse picture seemed to use a mix of low opacity med sized brush then with fine brush and then blurred a little and touched up with dodge. The VRGN pic seemed to use a base color, then with dodge/burn strokes and then finaly on top of that single strands with a 1pixel sized brush and blurred/smugged on the edges of some areas to simulate movement.
***added text***
also, some cases you will need to put the hair on a new layer, most of the time when you blur it/etc you will need to do that. Also experiment with 1pixel/point size brush with low softness or even the pencil tool and go back and soften it just a little.
***end added text**
That's not very descriptive of what I can tell, but hopefully it will give you ideas/help you figure it out better.
