Well here are 2 concept images for a gamebox design (hence the reason there are cut off) - just rough.. and unfinished, just anoys me that no matter how hard I try, I just cant get a smooth shade...as these examples show you.. (so help required here ) )

I use the Dodge/burn tools in PS4, but hmm. lemmi know what you think so far, and throw me some pointers

Try using Shades for COlors insted of Dodge, Burn, if you can handel Large image size then use a BIG IMAGE like 2000x2000 then when done painting resize to a smaller image size.

I use Paint and Airbrush toll (dont like using Dodge, Burn, Smudge)

See if that helps?

I don't know how many of you have visited Craig Mullins site, but he says that when he is going for really great detail in things like faces he will do something like an eye at 2000*2000 and then size it down. Personally I think thats amazing.

Me too, I only use the dodge/burn tools for reflective surfaces, like glass, bronze, gold and silver. IF I ever use it on skin, I do it very gently, but I really prefer the good ol' paintbrush.

As for the pic, try finding a similar looking photo on the web and use it as a reference to get the proportions right. There's really nothing wrong that.

I find it quite useful to use a largish airbrush head on about 10%. I also use the pantone colour references quite alot when doing skin tones.

smooth shading and detail is your problem. Starting out with a larger image won't help by itself. However, working to four times the the size of the final resolution is a good way to make the job a little easier. (ie. zooming out to 25% should be displaying the size you want. A nice round figure like 25% will also get rid of the jagged edges you'd get at 33% etc.)
but to change size in PS4, I think under "image" you'll find "image size
