Due to all the plagorizm thats been goin down over the past while, I am thinking about doing something about it. I know that it is so hard to catch someone who is posing with your art, and I'm thinking it should be. To all of you CGI/Perl or any other Programmerz out there, what is the possibility of making a image resemblence search.

You will load the original into the program, which will use some sort of scale/res/dither search for images that are related. When it finds pictures, it will send messages to the person who is searching. That person can then check out the search result and see if there work was plagerized...

I dont know...it's an idea...

Any ideas?

Well there are programs that create digital watermarks that are invisible, and if used by someone else it alerts the author of the image. I believe these programs are rather expensive, and for the life of me, I cannot think of the web site where I saw such a program.

www.digimarc.com

(I copied this from the ImageReady Help text...)

You can add copyright information to ImageReady images and notify users that an image is copyright-protected via a digital watermark that uses Digimarc PictureMarc technology. The watermarka digital code added as noise to the imageis generally imperceptible to the human eye. The watermark is durable in both digital and printed forms, surviving typical image edits and file format conversionsand may still be detectable when the image is printed and then scanned back into a computer.

Embedding a digital watermark in an image lets viewers obtain complete contact information about the creator of the image. This feature is particularly valuable to image creators who license their work to others. Copying an image with an embedded watermark also copies the watermark and any information associated with it.
For more information on embedding Digimarc watermarks, visit the Digimarc Web site in the U.S. at www.digimarc.com .

PS: Good idea CyPHa - too bad I can't program

I haven't really worked in any other version of Photoshop previous to 5.0, but I have the digimarc function at the bottom of my filters menu and I am running 5.5. I don't know if this is in any of the earlier versions of photoshop.

Whoops I jsut tried the function out...if you want to personalize the watermark you have to register with digimarc which is like $500 a year. oh well

You can write an "image resemblace" search engine. You can do it in Perl and Gimp Script. You can have Gimpscript pull up the image in Gimp, identify a couple of main "points" on the pic, and then pull every single pic on the internet and compare them to that information.

That would be OK if used by only one person, and the search would take minutes, depending on the server's abilities, but if it was a multi-user, "free-to-the-public" thing, it would kill the server if more than 3 or 4 ppl used it at the same time...

It can be done, though...
