well after seeing some of the great pics showing up on this forum, and especially after seeing loki's mech one, I decided to throw something together for critique. time was 5-7 hours. The biggest reason that I'm happy with the outcome is cause of the fact it's done with a mouse. (if that damn wacom of mine doesn't get past the "backorder" stage pretty quick I'm gonna be pissed) comments etc...?

The detail on the figure is good, but the background is sub-par. "Clouds" with "Poster Edges" is no substitue for a good, hand-painted background. A large, burning pile of dead bodies perhaps? It could show his day's work...

thanks for the feedback so far. I think this started out as a quick test, then turned into something I liked, but was having trouble with some parts and called it a test again I've redone it with a background because after looking at it, it looks pretty crappy like that. So I've done up a quick background (gausian blurred to hide all the mistakes of course :P ) as to what resolution I work at this is at 40% , so a bit more than double is what I work at. I think the reason being I can work a bit looser and still have it come out not bad when it's reduced(plus I find it hard to work with a mouse for fine detail) what do you think of the new bg?

the background starts off really rough, just to get the color pallete down more than anything, I think the blur is hiding alot of mistakes, I still have a lot of trouble with good looking backgrounds(when their not being blured , looking at stuff like Loki's has really inspired me to focus more on backgrounds, and damn I'm finding out it's hard, maybe it'll get easier once I get my wacom (counting down the days)
then again maybe I'm just hopeful

Please tell me you are using a picture for reference. The colors in the background are awesome. Keep up the good work!

Nice looking image.. I like the pose of the soldier.. As for the background.. sorry neither works.. The second one looks VERY much like it's a scan with the PhotoShop Artistic cutout filter aplied to it with edge simplicity set to low and edge fidelity set to high and then blurred with the Gaussian filter..

*ouch*

I don't mean to jump on any bandwagons or anything, but the soldier, the gun, the boat, and the bullets (etc.) weren't painted over from a photo, were they?

Rotoscoping is a style too

If I'm wrong, just take the fact that I think that as a compliment

First I'll just say that your pic is cool, esp for mouse work (I draw with a mouse, I hate it).

With the background though, it kinda looks more 'real' than the foreground. That isn't a criticism, coz they both rock, it's just that IMHO they don't seem to 'blend' well...

That's all - looking forward to seeing tablet work...

Failsafe,

Could you post the original size of that BG? The one you used in your picture(the second one).

Thanks

the background was an old one that I had done from photographic reference, which is part of the reason the persp doesn't match up. If you look at the bg before blurring there's alot of default brushes from photoshop, just messed everywhere. there was also some filters like ripple (filters, I know, the horror) to break up shapes). Like I said, I'm tossing this bg anyway.
bg before the blur
