I seriously dont know how much time work visas take aspecially from a shithole like ukraine is right now. He should try finding a job there or doing some contracts for companies here if he can. Consider doing it for free too. The more contacts and credit you have the more chances you will get to be invited in.

yep, I know his stuff well. I'll attest, the guy is a master!
Everyone would definately love to have him on the team.

I'm sure he dreams of a big US job like most, but perhaps he would have an easier time going to somewhere in europe. Britain perhaps.
Although most of the Western world is pretty strict on immigration these days.

Ukraine doesn't seem like all that much of a "shithole" to me, compared to something like its lovely neighbour Bielorussia. Anyway, I'd imagine it can't be too hard to get into the EU to work if you've got a job secured, but I don't really know
Maybe he should try contacting some more European companies. Like Remedy (http://www.remedy.fi), they've got a killer project and last I remember they were even looking for level designers.

Okay even though i dont live at Russia anymore i still can help some :)

Does Yury know about Venom? The folks who make it live at Kiev (Ukraine) so should be very close to him. He should contact Sergey Zabaryansky. the url is http://www.nephilims.com/

Ther's also company Buka (located at St. Petersburg + Moscow) and another one i couldnt remember the name of.. but ill try to find :)

From my own experience moving to US took me few years wait untill we went to the embassy, then a few hours wait at the embassy (which is constantly being nuked by mafia heh) umm many people were there too.. some people were squished and all bloody.. ehh nasty! But since im all slick and slim i got away LOL

Regulator: i remember when matthias worch aka as langsuyar (from clan www.ocrana.de) got his job at ritual (www.ritual.com) to work on sin. he worked on wheel of time after that, no idea what he does now. ritual did the paperwork and it took over a year until he got his greencard from the ins (he came from germany btw).
