Hi all.
Here's a link to a guy I've been on email terms with for some time now. He's a real cool guy working at an animationsstudio doing backrounds for features, commericals and tv-stuff.
http://www.animation-backgrounds.com/
Most of his stuff are done in oils, but he recently swithed to digital painting. Check it out. There's some really great stuff there. Oh, yeah... The program he uses is called Satori Filmfx 64. I bought the lesser version (Satori PhotoXL) some time ago when it was on offer, but haven't used it much. It says on the satori website that it was used to the highres backgrounds in 'The Matrix'. More info on the Satori paintprograms lineup can be found here:
http://www.satoripaint.com/
If you try out the demo, I would like to know what you think of it..
until later,

A friend of mine did some paintings for Matrix (the nuked city) and he uses Satori - I haven't actually checked it out but one of the advantages it has is that it works in 16-bit ... which would be nice if Photoshop could do that!!!! |

Loki;
You mean 16-bit per channel (I hope!)? =) Hmm, Photoshop does that (on PC at least).
( >image>mode>16bits/channel )
[ I haven't tried it (I should)... Eh, talk about storing LARGE files... =) ]

yeah! I agree. the interface in Satori is not at all great. But then again - neither is the one in Painter...
The coolest thing about Satori is that its resolution independant using a mix between bitmap and vector technology.
I'm hoping to dig more into it soon. I think it's the best alternative to Photoshop at the moment. Defentivly better and much much faster than Painter in my opinion.

hey booMSticK !
i downloaded the freewareversion of photoFX and was truly amazed of its power. in my opinion its much more powerful than photoshop.i tried a lot with it. ill post my first pic in a while,.
this res-independance is the best thing ive ever seen, vectorbased painter,..wow, no more worry bout the pixelz :-)
the interface, well, seems kinda fuzzy, but it supports lots of shortcuts, so ill see how it turns out in the end..
thanx for this great tip!.. |

yoszi, true paint* is one of the highend painter like the paintbox, or barco creator except they have their own hardware,.but the point is were having here a FREE piece of software (photoXL 2.29) which really kicks ass. paint* is about 2000-2500$...the latest version of filmfx is about 600$,....thats why im so amazed,..i havent heard of satori before.. |

it;s cute but those color wheels are retarded and there is no HSB slider. How am i going to pick up mu dull, monochromatic values with this ?
IS pressure sensitivity supported ?

btw i love the brushes and resolution independence. I'm going to dl film fx demo perhaps it offers different color selection methods. |

Frost: yes, of course 16-bit per channel. PS just allows you to colorcorrect images in 16-bit mode ... that's it. It would be much better if you could paint in it too, because it pretty much eliminates mach-banding. Floating-point colorspace would of course be even better ...

Well, for freeware, Satori PhotoXL is definetely the Best I've ever seen! It's resolution independant.. uses vector technology.. absolutely amazing to me.. because it doesn't really feel like a drawing program. It has airbrushes and smudge brushes and the like, but your canvas is infinite! Wow! Needless to say I'm impressed... and the speed.. wow again. I can have four open views of the same pic, and they all update in real time, never skipping a beat... not to mention that your brush size has no effect on speed either...
My only gripe is that the palettes take up way too much space.. the brushes and brush size menus are aren't conviently placed.
All said, Everyone should download the freeware and give it a shot, even if they never use it.
just my *very long* 2 bits..

yoszi, sure it supports pressure sensitivity. there are a lot of features there to adjust it individually (..havent tried them yet)
the palette is indeed a bit poor, but not unusable,...

Loki: Yeah, just found out yesterday that you can't edit 16bpc images... that's a damn shame (sorry). In fact, it wouldn't be that much harder for those Adobe coders to make it work natively in 16-bit (upon user selection)... it rather sucks. It would be cool to have imperceptable banding on subsequent color operations, just as it would be so cool to have photoshop swap twice as much... =)

Gizmo, how would you go about picking monochromatic values of a given color with satori ? Perhaps i'm missing something.
I had tip pressure set to soft in win98, that's why i didnt notice that pressure sensitivity is supported. |

yoszi, well i didnt find a good method yet, i solved this problem by editing my own palette, which is super easy...just pick the color from the picker and click and hold over the swatch,...this way i can make a "mono"-gradient very fast,...
to get the monovalues from a specific color just go linear from the inside of the picker to the outside, (in the direction, whick color is needed)
the colorpicker could be better. |

Gizmo, that's not what i mean. I use HSB sliders in PS, i pick color with H and get monochromatic values of that color (black/white) with S and B sliders or i just use big color picker. I can't do anything without that. In Satori you can only get H values, a rainbow. |

well, there's a mixer feature where u can choose 2 colours, and it will blend the two together. try using that for black and white. |

crap, right! you can insert color in the first slot and then insert black or white in the second. I was having trouble with adding colors to the mixer (you have to keep the pen's tip on color's slot). What a dumb fuck i am... Now i can shout, this software kicks ass!!! |

woah, wicked .... btw, what is it? hehe
bout the airbrush thingy, maybe just try using the solid brush to fix up areas by zooming in a lot (assumming that u have a pressure sensitive pen+graphics tablet)...

It's nothing, painting without thinking. I was just trying brushes.
I found fix for fuzziness - blur brush. |
