drawers,

My Topic of the day is, Does a drawer/painter make a good webdesigner ? Do people who have feeling for drawing als a feeling for designing ?. Is it the same skill to draw an anatomicly correct superhero or to layout elements in a cool way so that your web page looks super.

I really don't know, I am a reasonable drawer, but suck at webpages design ( I think ).

My opinion is that you do not need to be spectacular at one to shine at the other.

Lots of people have an amazing eye for composition, but can't draw or paint for monkey-turds. Some consider drawing/painting/etc to be a talent, and some consider it to be a skill. Whatever the case may be, it isn't a necessity.

Design has to do with the way you think and the way you percieve things in the real world. Lots of people have incredibly creative minds, and just because they haven't learned the skill of drawing for example, doesn't mean they can't emit that creativity in other ways... web design being one of them.

I dunno, I guess it's really just a matter of personal opinion, but I for on do not think that you need to be a good traditional artist to shine at web design. I suggest practice.

Being a drawer and a web designer are pretty much two seperate things. However, they both need someone with an eye for art. It's like comparing sculpting to painting. Different medias but both art forms... and I know I can't sculpt worth a damn So, to answer your question.. in my opinion.. no.

Hi guys

I make my living as a compositor/graphics designer. And occationally I do some Illustrations in Illustrator and various 3d packages. This is what I do best!

When it comes to painting I'm still learning
and for me it's a very fun thing to do.
And my approach to digi-painting is also for the fun of doing it, not necessarily something that I'll make some bucks on some day.
During my extensive work with 3d and compositing I've picked up quite a few things concerning composition/lighting... and I'm trying as much as possible to incorporate these things in my paintings.

Well... I think that if you are involved in both design and art you can use things from one world to improve on the other.

But a great web-designer can easily suck at drawing...

...Whereas a great artist will have a better chance, at coming up with a good design.

But then again... it's also a matter of knowing your tools and limitations.

The artist would have to learn a great deal about computers, internet and such before attempting to make a functional web-design.

after reading the question, I would have to react by saying "no, not necessarily." although both use creativity and some artistic skill, making web page layouts requires some of the facets of art, yet it requires data organization, plus you have to worry about loading times and the such. however, there are many that are good at both. I consider myself to be decent at layouts and at drawing, I'm just lacking in maybe the creativity area. oh well.

I'd say it's extremely helpful if you're very talented in art and want to go into webdesign, in my case it helped alot. I've been devoted to pencil sketch art for almost all of my life, entered state and national art contests (and won), and recently (just about a year and a half ago) I started making websites, if you compared my first website (basic text and stolen graphics) to a current website i've designed ( http://www.eccentrix.com/artist/pete/halo IE browsers only right now) the difference is incredible and I think that's due to my drawing skills, most people take alot more time to evolve into pro-webmasters but having natural artistic ability will cut that time in half (in most cases I guess).

Drawing has nothing to do with webdesign, but if you're looking for the skill you require to be good at either one: creativity. Meaning, if you're a creative person, you'll probably have the ability to see what looks 'good' and what doesn't, something that's useful for both drawing and webdesign. imho.

I would say that Drawing and Art practice, not painting so much, but moreso the ideas and concepts from art, will make a better webdesigner.... But Graphical Layout is not the only thing a webdesign must have..... The webdesign business is becoming lots harder now, E-commerce is what everything wants, and that will be the difference... from someone who can design a wonderful page, to someone who can design an ok page, but have the knowledge to Build an E-Commerce solution for their client.....

as for myself, most of the time i make my web site designs more in the style of complete "art" pieces. makes things much easier that way, for me anyway.

but then again, i never was that good with compositing, layout, and so forth.

makes more sense to me to start with drawing the whole deal like i was just drawing a half interface/half piece, then chop it up to pieces later on.

affected might have something to say about my taken liking to this way of working.. ahem, CF site.

but yeah, it's easier for an "drawer" to get into web design than vice versa. just gotta know your tools.

new school fancy toys like Dreamweaver and whatnot make things even easier...

but maybe i shouldn't be saying a thing, my own site isn't exactly anything too good layout and content and style wise.

I am about as good on both things. So i combined them, as so many other on this forum has done, making a homepage holding my art

I'm hoping to work with web design later on, or at least have it as a side-work while I'm in school, and be a comic drawer later on.

I must say that I think my drawing skills have helped me alot with learning more about design.
Compare the first web-page i put up in 1998 and the one i have now, and you'll see the difference.

I really love doing both design and to draw.
