I have a problem that I recently noticed when drawing. When I'm on paper, photoshop etc, I've noticed that when I flip the image over it usualy leans toward the right. It looks completely out of porportion and non-symetric, but when I'm drawing it, it seems fine.

So my questions are:
1) Do any of you have this problem?
2) Is it because I my eye is untrained?
3) Can I fix it?
4) If so how can I? (maybe with geometric shapes, lines?)

Thanks, all input is apreciated.

Hehe and I thought I was the only one that had that problem... If you flip the image horizontally or hold it up to a mirror (anything on my site) it suddenly looks f'in stupid. =\ I mean...Everything's disproportionate, out of place, the shading is wrong, etc... I've found the best way to critique your work and find mistakes -- Is to look at it in a mirror.

I don't think it's a problem with untrained eye; But with being comforable -- I think it stems from not examining your work objectively, and when it is suddenly reversed; You see the mistakes that others see. I know if I reverse other people's art, it doesn't look as wierd -- But if I reverse my own, it looks like sh!t. Dunno...

well, i think it's to do with u just getting so used to the image after working on it for a while, so u don't really see anything wrong with it... i started reading this book called, "drawing on the right side of u'r brain", and it talks about how u have 2 sides to u'r brain, and that the artistic side is a side that we don't use often... so once u flip an image, u sorta look at the pic as shapes and images, instead of such things as the nose, the hair, etc... so as u'r drawing u'r pic (this gets really easy in photoshop), flip u'r pic every once in a while and make adjustments. this way, the right side of u'r brain sorta takes over, because of thinking of everything as shapes, and visual values instead of identifyable things. some people even draw with their left hands (or vice versa for lefty's), so they can make an immediate switch to the right side of their brain aka:visual/artsy side. i dunno if u get me, cuz i'm trying to explain something really big in a small message, but it really helps if u can tell the difference which side is dominant, and can tell when u'r in the "right brain mode". i'm rambling on here, but i hope this helps somehow, hehe.

to make my very confusing message a little easier to understand, i'm gonna simply answer the 4 questions above has asked.

1.) Q: do any of u have this problem?
A: we all at one point or another, have, or at least have had this problem.
2.) Q: is it because my eye is untrained?
A: it's more because you're not used to using the visual side of u'r brain (the right side).
3.) Q: can i fix it?
A: YES!
4.) Q: if so, how can it? (maybe with geometric shapes and lines?)
A: first of all, practice, practice, and practice some more... u aint gonna get anywhere by simply just drawing once in a while and expect it to be good. try to start drawing things from life a lot! a simple excercise to get u to shift the the "right brain mode", or the visual mode, is to take a photograph, flip it upside down, and draw it. this way, u will only draw the lines and shapes u see, not the different identifyable parts of the picture. start very simple, maybe with geometric shapes, and then get into the detail.

i hope this helps u and all other people having this same problem. (hehe, it still seems confusing huh?)

I have the "Flip Canvas Horizontally" function on my F12 key in Photoshop. Flipping the image while you're working is an old trick - and it totally helps, because after a while your eye get's 'used' to the flaws in your image and more or less makes them look normal - flipping the image refreshes the impression in your eye and the mistakes want to jump out of the screen. I flip my stuff every 10-30 minutes ...

use the "actions" in PS if you want to put it on an F-key ...
