I've noticed a HUGE fall-off of Gameart.. which is sort of sad, it used to be a great resource for seeing some quality gaming-related artwork. It is rarely updated anymore which I assume is due to lack of submissions... kinda sad to see such a well-establish page go down hill.

Maybe it's because you can't officially post artwork from a game before it's released.
And also i noticed that i'm not as enthusiastic about the stuff i do at work anymore either(it has become a usual 9-5 work).
That's how i feel about it.

This forum has become a place were i can
do whatever i want and try out different
stuff. Stuff that i don't have time with at work.
I love it

I know why I don't send many pics in. There's a few reasons.

1) It used to seem like a huge honor to have my pics posted on Gameart. It made me feel like my pics were actually kind of good. But now everyone gets their pics posted, even ones that flat out suck. Some are just little doodles or sketches, or not even completed pics. There's not really any honor in having your pics grouped with those. Not that the pics on Gameart are bad, they're just not completed images.

2) This forum has exploded in popularity. Before, I felt like I needed Gameart as a way of getting publicity to my site. That was the only place I could get my pics posted on. Now, this forum is probably more popular than Gameart, so I seem to get more publicity here. And my pics don't have to be game-related here, so there's no restrictions.

Gamearts been dead pretty much since they took it down to update it. Since then its had very little done to it.
kind of sad considering what was once a great gaming art related site is now just well DeaD.

Binke: Those were days, heh If you feel nostalgic, its still available behind the gameart "redirect" ...
http://www.planetquake.com/braindead/main.html

Tinusch: Sure, I sometimes tend to post "low quality" artworks, especially when it is the first to come in after some "lag" (like now).

Adamantine: some people still think we compete with 3dp and vice versa. my opinion is that 3dp got a different focus on gaming art (and they do a great job btw). Just look at the news, tons of skin/model information you'll never find on gameart as we don't focus on that. but if you take a look at their POT feature, you'll notice a lag of game related artworks lately - at least thats my impression, i have no insights into their submissions tho.

Ya, braindead's right, the sites really do focus on different stuff so I would hardly classify each other as competitors. In fact, we often post news of their spotlights.
As far as the Picture of the Day on our site, well we basically post whatever we think is damn cool. I mean game art can't be classified...there are so many different styles that exert themselves in games that to say one particular style is "game art" doesn't really fly. However I think flash and I look more on the site as a digital art site, rather than as a game art site.
BTW, there was a whole slew of fantasy art posted over a week, because we decided to make it fantasy art week and besides, fantasy art is damn cool.

Thats sad but right. we got a lack of postable/quality submissions lately... so i ask you guys, do you want to see more, but "not that high quality" stuff like scanned sketches from a 10 year old... or not?

Brainy: Yah I'm still proud of those silver awards i got baahh didnt win any gold though hehe..

Seriously it was alot of fun, cos the site was like updated with 6-7pics everyday, and there were quakeart groups all over da place, including my own, which almost updated with 1 quakeart/day and doing logos n sheit for people heh..
btw, Brainy, what is Nop doing these days? Does he still paint/do graphics? Havent seen a art from him, in ages. His CO2 rocked da house

Don't talk, draw
Basically, I believe a contest should keep the spirits up, but not this moment-there seem to be a couple around right now...
Otherwise, it's just a matter of artistic inspiration, aka lazyness
There are days you see lots of pics and others that nothing shows up...

Btw I noticed this on 3dp the other day...

immi: i'm glad you agree on the gameart not = 3dp issue.

For everyone else who may wonder: gameart has got a clear "artwork must be visibly related to a specific game" policy. Without this definition the site would loose its point and all postings would be based on the webmasters' personal preferences. Who decides what is "cool"? I sure don't. e.g. webmaster likes anime so he posts it, but he doesn't like fantasy or whatever, so he don't posts it. if he just posts everything, he could also open www.art.com, but i doubt he'll find a host with enough terrabytes for him. i think the webmaster of an gallery like gameart should kinda have no opinion on what and who is "cool".

tinusch: I assure you that not everyone gets his submission posted at gameart. you would wonder how much lower the quality can sink if i post some of the "not passed" submissions. and tho i love this forum (sometimes i can't see game related art anymore) i doubt its high quality threads will stay forever as "exploding popularity" also attracts people whose artworks you don't wanna see (I don't hope it happens, but i'm already seeing some "ugly" stuff lately).

binke: nop is busy with real-lifeTM. i think the reason there were so many daily artworks at "quakeart" were: a) the whole game-art-gallery was kinda new and b) i posted every crap that came in. just browse the old site and you'll notice the difference in quality.

kos: i'm in contact with some sponsors, so a new contest is in the making.
"host gameart not auth" ? what the heck does that mean?

Uhm, what I'd like to say, and don't get me wrong is this. Yeah, I posted a pic and did a little tut for gameart (which actually boosted my popularity [I got alot of job offers, Dave (immi) offered me webhosting and some other things], so I thank them from the bottom of my heart), but why I actually stopped posting was when I sent 2nd picture wasn't qualified as "game artwork". Now I work on a game but I can't post anything, bcoz, you know, I can't. If I post anything, its on our site.

Don't have a clue... It randomly appears instead-or around the counter, I don't know... I just saved it because it looked interesting

Btw it would be kewl to have a game for a prize... (GAMEart) (yeah a wacom would be cooler but damn they cost too much!)

der punkt: the "problem" you pointed out happens quite often. I remember your 2nd submission and the reason it wasn't posted was because it had no visible relation to a "known" game - and sure not because it wasn't good enough, we don't like you or something else.

i'll start a new topic to help clearing this up, as i know many people seem to feel offended when they don't get an artwork posted.

sumaleth: you gotta believe me when i say this is really news to me.

the last time i asked nop (who owns/owned the cards and managed the contest) about this he told me he would send you a check/money instead of the voodoos (as they have become "outdated" now). he also told me you agreed with this and that he would take care of it. i haven't asked again ever since because i assumed he finally took care of it.

Now, i really have to excuse myself for him! i think this behavior isn't correct. i haven't heard much from him lately, but be assure you that i'll mail/phone right now asking about issue.

i'm not trying to blame it on nop, but it seems he screwed this up.

sumaleth: i just called nop, he told me he asked for your address ages ago but didn't get a reply (e.g. didn't know where to send it).

he said he would send you another email now and take care of it. please, let me know whatever happens.
