Any animators out there?
I havent seen anybody post anything of the kind here.
Im interested in animation (both 2D and 3D) but Im thinking Ill have to start with 3D because, it incorporates some of the same ideas, while being a little more forgiving of a medium. That and Im already versed in the texturing and modeling end of 3D Studio, just havent got a clue when it comes to REALLY animating anything.

heya.. im an animator too. or at least i pretend to be when im not busy doing crappy web design to pay for my college degree in 3d animation.. don't really have anything to post just now but my thesis will be done by april 19th (hopefully... otherwise i dont graduate :P ) So i'll be sure to post some links to that for you guys. I animate primarily in Softimage|3D which still tops all the packages for animation capability. I took a 2D animation course too.. i think i'll stay away from that, too much like hard work And I took a stop-motion animation course that i loved, it was so great creating these physical creatures that you animate by hand, i really learned a lot (cause if you f@#$ up, you're screwed )

Howdy. I posted 2 animations in the 'Fast Pig' thread... done in ImageReady. This is okay for 2D animation, but not great (some of the Photoshop tools don't work the same and the line quality is different).
I used to use Softimage, but now I've no access to it
Of course, there's always DPaint Animator... :P

Where do you go to school? Im just wondering since I want to major in 3D animation... right now, im a junior in h.s., so im starting to look around. I kinda want to go to a four year college so I can get a good education. Do you have any comments or suggestions?
I plan to go to University of Southern California or UCLA to major in film or fine arts (to get all my figure drawing and traditional skills) then to the graduate thingy for 3D. Or is an art school a better choice? Thanks

If I may interject, akh...
I studied Character Animation at CalArts (California Institute of the Arts). This school was originally created to train Disney animators. After the earthquake some 8 years ago or so in Northridge, CA., they rebuilt parts of the school and outfitted it with new, up-to-date high-tech equipment. I would highly recommend CalArts if you wish to animate...

Classic character animation is one of my biggest passions. But it's not that easy to post animation clips the same way as with pictures. But, it could have been nice with a separate forum for that here as well.

image ready to animate? hmm,...if your are familiar with dpaint-animation, then try tvpaint (aura). its the best animationpackage i know, except the real expensive ones (like toonz),..and it supports dpaint shortcuts
btw. im in 3danimation, too. Im using Alias Poweranimator atm, used softimage long time..

Akh, I'm afraid I'm on the other side of the continent. I go to the School of Visual Arts in NYC. We have some great equiptment and good teachers. We have a somewhat new department head (3 years now) who has done a great job transforming the departments program. My only complaint from my last 4 years would be a lack stress on good traditional animation and the lack of game design classes, but who knows, that might change too http://bfaca.schoolofvisualarts.edu

Well if you are looking for a good school with (not as good as cal arts..) this school like i said is not as good as cal arts but it will not cost you an arm and a leg .. this school is through SMC that is santa monica city college. its not just a junior college program , this program is very comprehencive and does require a portpholio to get it .. if you live in CA then its only 12 bucks a unit .. so its not that expencive and the techers are good. This school is very versital also .. you can do 2d animation or goto 3d animation, or even web design .. it is setup on 3 courcees.. they are animation (2d or 3d) new media(web design) and the busness side of the entertainment industry. The school has many teachers that graduated from Cal arts and also many teachers that work in the industry do animation or have in the past.. for all of you looking for a good school i would highly recomend it.. also this school is almost in the heart of the entertainment distrect in LA so all the companys around it like dream works .. digital domain , sony, disney etc.. all contribute to the school and offer summer internships .. hopw this helps out some you can take a look if you want at the web page for it at.. http://academy.smc.edu/
the page needs some work i think anyhow but you can see what they require in the protpholio and shit like that .. ok lates.. |

I do traditional character animation; albeit on the side, but I do it none the less. =P I don't do it for a living, just as a hobby...I'm afraid my films are rather short and somewhat demented, so I'll not post them here...hehe =P~ As said above; Go to CalArts if you really want the best character-animation instruction in the country.

Hey thanks giZMo
I searched for "TVPaint" and came to this page, which actually has a lot of information about packages and anim tip books, etc.
I know we're not talkin' Jurassic Park animation here...
...but dug this up and laughed. An old one made with Imagine for the Amiga... *woohoo* the memories... back in the day when 'IK' was just a dream for the future... ;D

I've dabbled in 3D as well as 2D; I created a couple movies ranging from 30 secs to 2 minutes with music added. I've made some logos, too.
Scoobydoo:
Ever tried combining 2D abd 3D? The following link is Martin Murphy's Online Gallery, an artist who combines both, and has produced many great award-winnders and magazine covers.
I've done some 2D artwork using Poser and Infini-D.. very useful if you're not like Dhabih who has excellent skill in lighting effects

I do "retarded" animations in GIF format, usually featuring weird characters doing things most people would find offensive, so i'm not going to post anything here since i'll probably get more insults than laughs. For example an older one is called "Matrix Jesus" and features ye long haired one with an m16.
