Ok, I'm doing some web design crap and I need to know how many of you love, hate or are indifferent to pop up windows.
Would you rather have a gallery where each image opens in a pop up window or a javascript pop up window?

Or would you rather have no popup at all and just have it all load in the same window? One thing I don't like with that idea though is that if you have all the thumbnails loaded in the gallery window and then you click on an image, you have to click 'back' to go back to the gallery and then you have to wait for all the thumbnails all over again. Even though it makes sense to have all the thumbnails in one window and the image in another, I've noticed that a lot of sites all just load in one window, despite having to click on 'back' and having to reload thumbnails. Why's that? Because of that, I take it people dislike pop up so much that they would rather wait for all the thumbnails to load again than have a popup window? Am I right? Ah geeze, I've rambled too much about popup....Your opinions are appreciated

Here what i like and what i dont,

I like:
gallerys with Small images of all/some of the images, then You click one of the SMall images and it POP UP a new Resized to Image window.

What i dont like:
Have to click back to see a new image.
Slow loading images.

You will find most ppl saying They dont like POP UPs because of the EVIL ADDs.

I prefer the pop-ups too. I used them on my site, cause waiting to go back sucks, and also so people can keep 2 or more images open to compare or whatever.

I think when pop up's are used in this way they are generally accepted. It's when you get pop up windows that you didn't ask for, advertising for some great site or product that you could care less about and didn't ask too see. But for image gallery's I have no problem with them.

Okay, cool. Thanx. This is going off on a bit of a tangent here, but do you people have two windows open when browsing the forum? I do. I have one for the topic list and then I'll open the threads in another window. Because I hate having to go back and reload all the topics. Uhh, that had no relevance at all, whoops. Eh.

I just sat there and read all of those posts, and my mind went from "Pop-ups are the DEVIL INCARNATE!!", to "Hey, maybe it's the only the pop-up ads that are the DEVIL!!".
I really like galleries with pop-ups, except for the fact that if you look at several, you end up getting 400 windows, causing lag and such.
I really like galleries without pop-ups because the thumbnails are stored as temp files, so it doesn't take hardly any time at all to click the back button.
Each side has it's plusses, but I actually think that pop-up is the way to go.

pop-ups are great - they allow you to set your own window size and get everything to fit in perfectly, which is great for graphic design work where resolution differences are a real bitch. i'm currently working on my own site, which will use pop-ups here and there to show articles (i'm interested in magazine-style publishing).

pop-ups are great if you know where and where not to use them - eg, don't set one to load automatically with your main page - almost everyone will close it.

I find pop-ups can often be very annoying if they: open unannounced, open in a very large window or hide the browser toolbar (thereby undermining the browser-usability people are used too).

And when I already have lots of windows open it's sometimes impossible to figure out which windows belong to which site. If want to view a link in a new window I'll just hold SHIFT when clicking it.

At the very least one should alert people to the fact that links or thumbnails will open in new windows, and if possible give people the OPTION to keep everything in the current window.
