lo peeps,

I've been working ona Q3a TC called Headhunters3 for the last year or so, just released the webpage and wondered what you all think of the artstyle we are going for.

I expect many wont like it as theres a lot of clean shading fans out there, personally i think clean shading in games is a thing of the past ( the amiga scene!).

I loved the amiga scene, used to do clean shading, but we have the technology now to have true realism defined in more varied forms of texture releif and thats what im going for in general these days...

Perhaps im just a renaissance man.. last bastion of decay and a cleant cut obsessed culture

Well, Rorshach, I also like to do Decay, but I probably bounce between the two a little more "clean/dirty/clean/dirty".

Personally? I think you could MAYBE lighten up the opacity of the dirty layers youve got going. Sometimes it makes it hard to decern what Im looking at.

For instance the concept picture for "V" is a tad too dark/low contrast. I had to brighten my monitor just to see the detail that you put into him.

Would you mind 1 more small critique? I think maybe you are a little too enamoured of cross-hatching.

Oh, BTW: On the clan PMS skin, everything except parts of the lips, and the "noise" under the chin on the face map looks a little blurry? Maybe even just running an unsharp mask over that would help? The eyes in particular could use a little more detail/sharpness perhaps?

Enough from me, lest I dig myself into a hole I can climb out of, and then have him PILE the dirt back upon me, critiquing my OWN art style!

All in all though, I am, and will continue to be a FAN of your wonderful works.

Scooby:

yeah your right some of my crotch hatching is too intense in the concepts ( all of them) please remember tho, these were drawn about a year ago and i have opened and lightened my penmanship since then.

As for too much dirt, well i understand your POV but im deliberatly making it a little too dirty because i think its wrong to fear hiding your detail work.

I love the workmanship of Kenneth Scotts work, its looks great in stills but the minute it moves ingame it all blurs, like all high detail stuff does.

I was havinga talk with Roger Bacon about how he always tried to do more simplistic bold designs cos ingame you can still recognize them.

I mean im reconsidering this 'make each piece a work of art' thing, im aiming for making it look a certain style ingame without it standing so much purely on the depth of detail/ sharpness in it.

I'm looking to satisfy the gamers more than the artists i guess these days

but i appreciate the input, its good to see people see the same weaknesses i do rather than other weaknesses i think are strengths.

I know what you mean.
Im starting to think that spending 10+ hours on a skin or something is just insane.

What Im really waiting for are 3D engines that render real-time cartoons.
I think that will really be a break-away point for artists who go for more style over technique.

Very dark gritty feel to it, textures and character's are amazing, love the way they look battle scarred, experienced battler's even. Not shiny new gleamy warriors having their first day on the battle field. Kinda have that look in their eyes, where they have gone beyond death, and have become one with death..... Ok maybe I better stop before I get any weirder now hehe. Concept's are cool too, the drawings for the story kinda reminded me of Tim Vigil's artwork, you probably know him. a guy who used to draw an ultra violence / sex comic called Faust, very cool if you like that kinda thing. Personally I'm still waiting for issue 12 hehe >;p, Headhunter is seriously lookin awesome.
I eagerly await more..

lol Ror... I've been a big fan of your site for a long time... nice to see you've filtered out into the lovely collection of artist talent Dhab has going here. I've always admired your skinning talent BECAUSE it was grungy, and not clean. It made (makes) your skins unique. It's a great style you have going there... keep it up. I found too many skins looked cartoony or too bloody sterilized because they were flat shaded, or just too damn clean. THen I wandered over to your site (back when you still had the huge watchmen mask logo in the centre with the buttons on the side, and were hosted on Planetquake), I was instantly in love with not only your dirty style, but how it manages to be grungy, but still be detailed, and not look like an overwhelming mess. I can't wait to get my grubby hands on HH3 becuase I heard you were working on it....

P.S. it's "cross" hatching. not "crotch". Otherwise, that's a highly disturbing piece of mental imagery...

Cheers turbo,
glad theres others in community like the dirty decayed look, it is afterall a matter of preferrence when comes to deciding its good

Tanis: all the models other than R7 were modelled by James 'Gwot' Edwards whose at Digital Extremes now.

Alphawolf is animating Carnun, Nemesis (Sir-Tech) is animating V and Boiler. Jay ( transformers mod) is animating R7 and Shaitan.

Dont know about you but im really hyped to see what these guys do with the models. The shame of it is... q3 dont have skeletal animation...
