Howdy. In the spirit of 'in-progress,' I thought I'd post this pic. I'm about half-way done with the character and right now it's missing battle-scars/dirt, a background, lighting and effects. The next version I'll post will most likely have Zetrus done, and maybe a prelim bg.
If interested, click on the picture to view a larger version .jpg (unposted original is 1500x2048)...
Though I usually do not share my work until I feel it's finished, I thought it might be interesting for someone (?) to see this as it evolves.

ehh i just remembered somethign i was thinking.. I noticed this when i was drawing that when i draw i subcountiously "steal" from other people.. For example i looked that that nice pic (err anime) and noticed 3 dots everywhere Im liek.. cut the dots! Dots everywhere i look (and i mean 3 dots on other pics not this one)
err what was i gonna say.. ah yea, im liek for originality so i say LOOK AT YOUR OWN WORK AND IF IT HAS ELEMENTS OF OTHER ARTISTS WORK, DESTROY YOUR PAINTING AND START ALL OVER!!! !MEUEAHHAHAHA
mmkay?

Well, Mr. Shizo, you're certainly entitled to your opinion. I don't know if I'd go as far as destroying my artwork every time I see elements of other artist's work in it.
I agree that everything we do is in some way a reproduction of what we experience - and not just sometimes. Sure everyone has imagination and inspiration, but when you get right down to it - what is original, anyway?
If we all had to live in fear of copying something, no one would ever use 'reference' nor look at anything - in fact, they couldn't even let themself 'see' anything - just live in a pitch black room from the moment they are born. Otherwise, they are copying...
The dots are intentional, as you might have guessed. I like the triangle idea, but I think I might have seen triangles somewhere before... *hmmm*...
I think you're just going to have to nuke me, Shizo.
;P

PS: Here's the next version (after many wasted hours because my computer decided to crash often and make life easy for me.). Still have to add more lighting, more bg work and polishing.
PPS: And ZAPmAn, I would let you texture this bad boy if I could... really! It's a ZBrush picture... I'll explain if you're interested.

This is indeed a very cool ZBrush image(s). Looks like you know ZBrush quite well!
Questions:
This image has many 3D objects, do you use Markers?
Which brush do you use the most? |

Well, after visiting the dentist to take care of my triangular cavities...
ZBrush takes some getting used to. It is an extremely powerful program with a lot of 'untapped' functionality. How did I learn? Well, I wish I could say I figured it all out on my own. I did some contract work for Pixologic (creators of ZBrush) before.
When I post my site someday soon, I want to make some ZBrush tutorials. The fact of the matter is - it's a fantastic graphic application - but not enough exposure and explanation. I want to help educate those who want to learn. I'll post when that's available. Actually, I wrote a (probably outdated by the time it releases) tutorial for 3D Artist magazine that should come out next month. I understand your frustrations - it can be very hard to be patient while working with something in development (and that goes for games as well!). I'll try to help where I can
I've had a little time to work more on the Zetrus picture. I'll post it when I finish Shizo's part ;P Maybe in a couple of hours. We'll see...
This picture was fairly easy to make. In ZBrush I created Zetrus by sculpting its pieces separately, then combining them into Pixols. Then, I changed some materials (from chrome to plastic), lighting, added dirt/scratches (by pulling Pixols out/in/across with alpha brushes), etc. Next, I added a new layer for the short-range bg. I added another layer (with flat color) to paint the long-range bg. Then it was just a matter of adding more glow to the eyes/guns and, you know, some polish here and there. That's where I'm still at, is the polishing stage.
Originally, as in the 1st pic, I was going more for an 'Anime-toy-model-Mech' look... As I worked more, it leaned more in the realistic direction, sort of an "Anime-40K-Mech" look. I just love how the Warhammer 40K models are painted. I don't know which direction I'm going now. Anybody have a map?! ...What's the quickest way to Russia, so I can pinch someone ;P I guess in Shizo's case that would be somewhere in the USA now...?
Thanks for dropping comments (and nukes ;P), and I'll post a new version ASAP.
Ciao,

Karisu will stay my home and we WILL celebrate the triangular cavities! -=8o]
Hey where do i download zbrush? I like this that stuff looks like it's actially modelled in 3dmax or someplace. And again, i still like the red picture better ;o Sometimes you know you just gotta stop drawing not to overpaint LOL
/me sends karisu a bottle of vodka, a fresh loaf of bread, and a map with marks showing how to get to the Shizo apartment!

_ZBrush:
Download a free demo or the commercial version for cheap (they might even trade for a Piroshki!) at
zbrush.com.
_Markers:
Why yes, Pixelator, I used Markers everywhere!!! Every piece I sculpted and snapshot into the image as Pixols, I placed a Marker. For those unfamiliar with them, they allow ZBrush to remember the position, alignment and size of an object you place in the image. So, I did this for all the pieces (almost) I placed. That way, I could later come back and, for example, replace the legs with a new design or swap the pipes for candy canes or whatever...
_Most Used Brush:
Toilet brush. No question. Actually, I use that the least! Gets little, stinky flakes stuck in my hair... :P
Seriously, I use all the brushes for different reasons. The 'Simple Brush' is great for painting the quickest and easiest (like on a canvas)... but the '3D Brush' allows me to add to whatever painted depth already exists... and then there's all the 3D tools that let me sculpt and deform shapes I'm working with... and save 'em for later use (or export as obj with the textures).
_Vodka:
I accept your kiss and don't kill you because I'm secure with my sexuality! Cheers!!! I humbly and appreciatively accept your kind gifts and we celebrate at the Shizo apartment together AHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!
All night long with talks of red triangles, sickles, hammers and women!
_Frustrated:
I am. I think I did stare at and work on this piece too long. Making little image adjustments here and there. There and here. Change this. Move that. Left. Right. Wrong. *ack*
Ah well, I'm going to leave it at this new version for now, until I get fresh perspective. Any comments or suggestions other than cool triangles and the color red ???
-k
PS: Comrade Shizo, look and you'll see I did add the 3 triangles...
