I have been working for the past month on creating a web-design company that covers mostly small businesses, but I am having a creative block and I keep becoming dissatisfied with what I have created, so I keep deleting the site and starting over again. I just want this to look like a regular webpage, but still have a simplicity to it. Here's what I have so far, I know it must look like shit, but my judgement is impared. http://www.streetdesign.net |

Well okay, if you're starting on a design thing, let me tell you what's wrong with the design I see here (from all points of design, not just how something looks, becuase overall, it looks pretty good). Im horrible at writing so here's a point form critique:
1)This design doesn't fit in my browser window. A website this simple should not require a 1024x768 resolution, especially since the overall design would look a lot better if it were smaller.
2)There's no need to have the company name in a large header font twice, and the second "street" by itself has little relevance to the rest of the layout.
3)Putting the overly-large "welcome" graphic in that spot in such an overpowering manner makes me constantly look at it, instead of the actual content, design should always lead you ultimately to the content, not to the welcome message, which yes, should be read, but only read once.
4)Having your body text butt up against the text box is not a good idea. Have some space between the text and the border of the box/table/cell whatever.
5)Don't put dark grey on dark blue, you can't read it. (ie: "please stay awhile" text)
6)Body text is too large, anything over a 14pt font is considered type fit for a header or subhead, and way too large for body copy (small text meant for reading).
Anyway, that's my opinion of this layout from a design perspective, it's coming along good so far, just a few design traps to watch out for. Keep up the good work, I'm sure you'll come up with something you like. |

Thankyou for the insight sc00p, I'll rember those pointers... but first of all, the second "street design" is the actual navbar, if you hold your mouse over it, you'll see that it is split 5 ways into buttons. thankyou for telling me it doesnt fit 800x600, I'll check that on the next site I am doing, I have completely scrapped that site you see now, and am starting over again for the 5th time... Im not using flash this time, Unless I decide to make an intro or some background music.. thanks again, and I'll reply later when I have mostly finished the next site

First of all
Design the pages for 640 - 480 mode
Internet Standards say so..... The market u are looking for will have there monitors set this high, if u do pages correctly at this mode, it will look Great regardless of Resolution.
Welcome pages suck, unless you need it to show different version of the page, for instance Flash and HTML
i would still say, that u should make a new innovative design, the page looks very plain, and if i wanted someone to make my page for my company, i would keep looking if i saw ur page compared with someone else that had some design i had not seen before.....
Scoop has basically said all this, but im at school, bored, with nothing to do, so i just wished to enforce... )

IF YOU CANT MAKE IT OUT, WE CANT MAKE IT OUT understand.
Check out the Use of COLOR consept
there this program that makes you a color Layout out. http://www.canyouimagine.com/prod_cs.htm
Logo on top...
do you mean to use the Street as your logo? it looks strage with Street, Street Desgin.
We use 640x480 as a guidline foreveryones page we make, onless the Client tells us they want higher or waht-not.
BTW done become one of them WebSite design companys that use the SAME layout for every page they make!, and they use PLUG-INS! eeeek i hate them! they need to be call something els then Web desginers

Thanks again guys... I tried something different when making this website. I tried to make it very simple, but focus on content, and not really make it stick out... I guess I should just scrap it and go back to what I have been doing for the past 3 years... Thanks again, and I know about the grey on blue, It was just dark and I was tired I thought I selected black, my bad.. |
