There's no 'correct' way of shading... It would be easier if you could post a drawing of yours so we could comment on what to improve.

yeah, post post post.

If you have problems drawing a nose i'd get a photo as reference and draw it from there, if the form and shading still don't look good then hmm...practice is the best teacher, there's no workaround.

Like Affected said, there's no correct way, there are different styles of drawing, but the amount and correctnes of the shading comes from you, not from any technique.

did somebody say shading?!?!?
well, the *correct* way of shading (and therefore the best results) is to do it only one way:
very small strokes... and i mean small, like about the size of this line: _
and when you have a very dark area, don't apply any more pressure than what you would normally do for a light area. You have to layer it, and layer it, and layer it, until you get the value you like. If you dont, your blacks will become very shiny

yes, its very tedious, but thats the way shading is... hope I haven't destroyed you're confidence

akh - i hope you're kidding about that being the *correct* way to shade...?!?! there are as many correct styles of shading as there are people.

i personally use large, thick strokes. when i'm painting, i use HUGE strokes. this is because i used to do so many timed figure sketches in school, and i had to learn how to be efficient with my strokes.

one problem with using tiny strokes is that a lot of people starting out are afraid to make a definite line on the paper. they make fuzzy lines using lots of tiny strokes, and it hurts the feeling of depth, line quality, and often proportion too.

if i was to follow your advice, i'd be lost. that's just me, and i'm sure it DOES work for some people. but keep that in mind when you're giving advice...
