Hey..... My dad gave me 4k american to pick up a new comp for the family. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestion or problems for comps running ps 5.5

You can literally get any HOME system you want.. (within reason).

I suggest visiting www.alienware.com for some pretty phat precompiled systems. If you have hardware knowledge yourself, then I suggest building your own. That's what I did, and it only cost me 3k Canadian .. and my system flies

Anyway, check out that page, you'll find something really sweet there.

4k and waist it on ONE family computer? Get 2 computers, the family one.. and get yerself a one for .. yerself. (i hate when poeple use my computer) ..
there are lots of good computers in the 2k range

Yeah, dude, with $4,000 you can get way more than one system... If you know what you're doing, you can build yourself a system for $700. You can get 5 systems with $4,000, man... Or just get one system for like $1,000 and spend the rest on yourself...

case, motherboard, memory, and processor barely come around to that.

Gamepc also has kick ass systems - and you can configure your own to what you want. They check for incompatiblity problems instantly and offer some nice services.
They're a bit pricey though, but so is alienware.

Do not go with a store bought or Gateway/Dell/Micron PC.

I just got myself a machine that cost around $4K, of course I spared no expense! I got it from Polywell Systems - http://www.polywell.com - if you click on the products section you can see a list of the setups they offer, but of course they specialize in custom setups. I got myself an Athlon 700, 256 megs, Oxygen GVX 32 meg, 9.1 gig 10k uw-scsi2 RAID, 21" monitor and more.. excessive for your family needs perhaps -- like people have suggested you can probably get two decent configurations for $4k, so tell your family their Celeron 400 cost $4k and keep the other $2750 for your own setup

Hehe, chrisk82... It IS possible to get a reasonably good system for $700-$800, you just have to know where to look. Gotta get everything separate. Go to computer shows, look it catalogs, win stuff in auctions... It's tough but my brother is a major computer nerd and somehow manages to accomplish this stuff...

Here are my specs:

17" monitor
AMD Athlon 550
128 megs RAM
Voodoo3 3000 AGP (granted, not the best 3D card, but with a 400 mhz RAMDAC, it is (or was) the fastest 2D accellerator)
20 gig UDMA HD
6x8 Wacom Intuos USB

I've invested a little over $850 total in this machine. Retail is definitely NOT the way to go. Its all in who ya know I guess.. I have a lot of friends who are able to get ahold of scrapped OEM parts free and sell dirt cheap. While doing business this way is risky, I can sometimes get hardware in exchange for peanuts... like some CDR's with some "evaluation software" on them.. hehehe

agreed...its not wot u know...but who u know....u just get ur friend that works for a computer shop to gank it from the shop and sell it to you for like 1/4 of the price =)....then theyll do a stock take a wright it off...and everythings ooookaaay...lol...but its still good to buy stuff urself =)

Personally I suggest that you build yourself one. Think about what you could through into that joker with 4k. You could have one serious machine.
Ah, I have a better idea - buy one of those cheap ass systems for like a couple hundred bucks and give me the rest of the cash. I can think of some stuff that I could use...Hehe.

Hmm, if you want to get the most bang for your buck, learn about overclocking or find a site that sells overclocked processors. For example, as soon as my mom gets her taxes back I'm spending about 900 on a upgrade. Here's what I'm doing (right now, may change because prices are always dropping):

AMD Athlon 500 (the most overclockable)
Asus K7M (best MB to use for overclocking - going to change to KX133 board once released)
128mb PC133 Dimm
Addtronic Full Tower case w/300w PS
Asus V6800 DDR 32mb

Luckily, I know a guy who can overclock like a MoFo.

Dual?? I hope your planning on using Windows NT or Windows 2000. Windows 98 doesn't gain full performance with dual processors.

why do you need all of this performance? 3d applications, games, 2d, what??

Dual processors are good for the 3d work and heavy 2d editing for movies and stuff. I think some of the guys at ID Software actually went from dual systems to single processor boards - but they're also using the NVidia Quadro. I have no clue what I'm talking about or where I'm going with this, so I'll shut up now.
