'Lo 'lo 'lo!
I just tried Painter Classic off my WACOM CD.. first time i really didn't look into it much and deleted after 5 minutes of looking at it. But yesterday i saw this reeeeally great picture called "BucketHead" (i think) made in Painter and it looked very much like a real life stuff. Kinda random somewhat, with really nice a bit textured colors (everythign i like) then i tried it yesterday AGAIN.. ITS A KICKASS PROGRAM! It does have some interface/features downs but stuff you can do is amazing.. looke what i did here in liek 10 minutes (first Painter pic i made after doodling with it)
PS: Stop those POS-ers on Digital art forum who post topics like "hahahahahahhahaha..." and "Hacked!" I say be friendly to eachother.. or i'll blow your f$(*&ng head off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are way too many brushes/instruments for me. I keep forgetting where is the one i need for certain effect Any tip on that one too?

Selection tools do suck. That's why I seldom use them. Zoom is fine for me....what's wrong with yours? If you have too many brushes, you may want to put some into a custom library...however, i don't think you can do that in painter classic...you'll need to get the real deal for that.

I use Painter 5, so I would guess Painter Classic doesn't have all these features. But here's some info:
Selection tools: rectangle for rectangles, lasso (or exacto knife) for irregular selection. For detailed/complicated selections, create a mask (it's on the objects pallete in P5), then paint on the mask layer with any art tools. Then click the "load selection" button.
Keeping track of tools: in P5, and some other versions, you can drag a brush out of the brushes pallete so that makes its own palette.
Zooming: good old command+ and command- (on a Mac anyway, perhaps ctrl+ on a PC?). Also, you can drag select an area with the magnifying glass to zoom that area to fill the screen. Also important is the hand tool. This lets you drag the screen around. Hold down the spacebar as you drag to activate it.

Well, I've tried painter 6.0 a bit now, and the interface seems pretty much the same to me. Remeber that most of the UI can be costomized.
What pains me the most, though is that Painter 6 is STILL so frickin' slow. I also saw that Buckethead tutorial and thought it was awesome. But if I try out the brushes mentionend in that tut. I feel that , even in very low res (640*480) that Painter is waaaaaaaaay to slow. Maybe it's my setup on my PII350Mhz 128MB ram running NT4 but I doubt it. I guess I'll be faithfull to Photoshop for some time yet... |

I'm using Painter 6 for a few months now, and definitely prefer it over v5. Many of the brushes were completely revamped so there was some relearning to do, but in the end I feel it was a useful change as it also made me learn some new ways of working. I also like the new interface, it gives better access to all the brush parameters. And it's nice to have Photoshop-compatible layers now, even though I still don't use them for anything in Painter...
I've never had much to complain about Painter's speed; sure most of the tools are too slow to really work in 4K res or something, but I'm doing my stuff mostly at 1500-2000 pixels wide size nowadays and it's quite usable (and I've now found use for many brushes that were useless when I still worked directly at final resolution). Some brushes do lag, but I've got used to that I guess
(For comparison's sake, my setup is K7-550, 256MB, Win2k)

I dont like selection tools but i think i'll get used to that.. the huge number of brushes annoys me =] Once i learn what one brush does, i eventially go away from it and forget what it does lol! The zoom i dont like at all.. first of all there isnt a window with the image thumbnailed (like in PS) but its like my main option in PS, i use that window to move around the image quickly since im zoomed often lal the way in. The thing with Painter's zoom for me is that i wish they had "unzoom" assigned to the right mouse butt. because i dont need this "select zoom area" thing that messes me up.. When i do Ctrl+click to unzoom with my WACOM, i cant keep my pen steady so it keeps selecting small srea quickly and zooming IN instead of zooming out (annoying sheat!!)
ALSO: how do i change speed of the scripts? They help me quite a lot but they go by kinda quick and sometimes crash my compy. Where can i get the new scripts with pics like that CanHead painting?

uh, excuse me for being ignorant but... why do people want to use painter for? I just see it as a tool to simulate mediums like oil and watercolor... some of the paintings done with it are really cool, dont get me wrong, but why not just use the real thing? |

Painter is nice. =) I just got my Wacom tablet a few days ago (painter came with it).I'd agree with the limitations, but it's a good program to start your blurred out base image, then use photoshop to enhance/finish it. I find most of the art work pieces (especially 3D) use more than one application to finish the image.

akh--
you're excused for being ignorant.
Why do people use Photoshop, when it's just a simulation of an airbrush? if you want to look at it that way, Painter is a simulation of airbrush, oils, watercolor, chalk, pencil, ink, crayon, dirt, gravel, water, and 10,000 other things that don't even exist. Its painting/drawing/illustrating (or whatever) capabilities are just FAR more versatile than photoshop's, and far more customizable. i think the only things that keep most people off of it are the interface and performance issues.

Trance-R: take a look at Funfetus' site, so you can see what can be done with Painter without switching to other paint proggies.
Funfetus: you're right about the interface thingy... it's hard to get accustomed to its interface if you're coming from PhotoShop.. and another problem (the main one for myself) is that it's painly slow even on a quite fast PC. Even a simple brush stroke seems to be lagged on a 640x480 canvas. I can't really get a clue about it (I'm using 5.5). I hoped that 6.0 was resolving it, but by what I heard it's still laggy..

I have Painter 6 on a 233 mmx 32 meg laptop. It runs A LOT smoother than photoshop. Even at 1024 x 7xx canvas size.
Funny how it works out ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |
