Hello everybody,
I've been reading this forum for some time now. It's interesting to see so many diffirent artists helping eachother out, posting tips, giving comments (both good and bad it seems .. There are truly some excellent artists here (Loki, Craig Mullins, to name a couple) willing to share some of their secrets, which is something you don't come across very often.
I've also noticed some Ex-demosceners around here. Yes.. I used to be active in the scene a while back (Anarchy/Lemon./The Black Lotus).. It's also great to this good old Joe (Hi Loki) resurfacing after many years since his scene activity.
Anyway, in the light of sharing I figured I might post something here aswell. At the hyperlink you'll find an Image I drew back in 1997 when still working at Eidos Interactive. It is a poster image of Miss Lara Croft which was done on request of CEO Charles Cornwall.
The picture is a mix of both 2D and 3D. The girl was drawn in PhotoShop and the background and the UZI's were done in LightWave 5. All on an old Ppro200 with 256Megs of Ram and only 2 GB of HD space. Considering the fact that the full size version is approx. 10000x7100 pixels with detail down to the individual pixel, you can imagine what pains I went through when painting this one..
It was actually the first image I ever painted this large. Anyway.. have a look at it and feel free to tell me what you think.
I'll post additional comments if people want to know.
So here it is..
http://www.xs4all.nl/~dang/Lara%20my%20love1000x714.jpg
alright.. enjoy..
Danny

OH MY GOD. THAT PICTURE IS AWESOME. That definitely rivals some of Dhabih's work... (sorry, but it is REALLY good, you have to admit) It's so sharp and colorful... MAN, MAKE SOME MORE PICS. |

Hi Danny!
Nice to see you here, it's been a while (you were supposed to do something for the final version of Contour, remember? )...
heh, this is finally the fabled Lara image of yours that I've heard so many rumours about!! And I can really see what the rumours were about... The original is pixelled at 10K res? I wish you'd post a closeup of the face and hair so we could further appreciate the detail...

Hi Danny
Wow! I'm speechless. I've always found people who have had a "thing" for Lara Croft a bit strange, but I now find myself as one of those people. I have sent you an e-mail with some questions. And please, could you post a close-up? I would love to see the detail!
cheers

"Rival some of Dhabih's work?"
Hehe... Dhabih's not the standard for comparison, folks! This is better than what Dhabih's ever done and probably will do. You don't have to praise him just cuz you're on his board...
Definitely years of experience and a hell of a lot of pacience are gathered in this piece.
Congratulations, man! I'm taken by it. It's on my desktop.

...wow...
I've never been a fan of Lara Croft, in fact I dispise the Tomb Raider games. But now.. umm... now I can relate to all those 12 year old boys.
Good work.

Hey dude!
Pretty f*cking awesome!
You were in black lotus and worked on 'Contour'? I loved that demo ... (especially the music, but the visuals anbd the breakneck-zoomin at the end!)
Lara looks really cool - did you go off a photograph for her?
Well, welcome on the board - I'm sure everyone's ready to pick your brains ...
Cheers
Loki
PS: Where are you working nowadays?

I am utterly speechless. Its beautyfull. I hope you find a way to make a lot of cash with skills like that.
But as a Prepress jockey there is one thing that is buging the hell out of me. Her shirt has to many wrinkles. Better subdue those before it goes to proof and the art director sees it.(That was suppost to be a joke)

Hehehe, I'm not trying to suck up or anything... I have just always thought Dhabih was the greatest. His pictures always have so much detail and action and atmosphere to them. Danny's pic doesn't have the huge BANG to it like Dhab's pics do, but that is more than made up for by his sharp detail, vivid colors, and perfect proportion and perspective. |

I feel another flamewar coming up behind the horizon - let's not get into an argument of who's better. (we all know that 'DerPunkt' is the best )
Opinions will always differ, so there's no end to that. I think there are so many rockin people on here, some that just started out, some pro's some people on there way there - let's just learn from each other without getting into who's better ... AMEN! |

ahhh....Damn that's a very nice painting. Looks quite realistic. The 3d background seems a bit too polished thought, I would've liked to see it painted like lara, especially that I see you have the talent to do so. This painting is fantastic, keep it up
PS: Can someone hand me a towel?

hmm, Danny's rather well known as far as I can tell from surfing around.
Add another big-ish name to this forum.
That pic is cool. She looks like the model they chose to act as Lara in the photoshoots but she's been pumped up to the (absurd)proportions of the game Lara.
interesting.

What are "demosceners?"

Hey Craig
Heres some info that explains what the scene is better than I can. This was taken off of the http://www.scenet.de/ site:
Demo-Scene:
Maybe you remember the colorful C64 INTROS which crackers have put in front of the games to tell you who brought it to you? That were the earliest INTRO-ductions or better say the first demoscene related productions. The hard thing for the CODERS (programmers) today at introcompetitions at parties is the fact, that the bytelimit of their INTRO is strictly limited. They have only 40kb or 64kb to use, so the intro of the coder with the best packer-routine or precalculating routine will win.
To speak generally about the demoscene, it can be compared with the music-scene. There are groups of artists who are all doing different things, like making computer graphics, either a logo, fonts, entire screens or even animations. Then there are artists who make computer music. At the demoscene we also have DISKMAGS driven by EDITORS that can be compared to newspapers in real life. Magazines-on-(hard)disk try to inform the sceners what`s going on, but they should normally also reach their goal in entertaining the readers. Also, some groups present SLIDESHOWS or MUSICDISKS showing the skills of their graphcians/musicians in a coded form to the public. But most productions coming out are still DEMOS (demonstrations) which can be compared in some aspects to modern videoclips shown on music-channels like Mtv or Viva.
And every year the demosceners come together in one of the big parties like Assembly, The Gathering, Mekka&Symposium or The Party to compete against each others or just in order to have fun or to booze around a bit.
Hope that helps
cheers
dave

nice explanation - let me just add my 2 cents:
GEEKSTORY - The Demoscene in Europe 1985-1991
by Dr. Loki
I might be a typical example of a demoscene guy:
[timewarp]
We are now somewhere in the mid-80s. For the first time homecomputers are affordable and fun enough so that 14 year old like me can drive their parents insane til they get one. Usually it is a Commodore 64 - 16 whopping colors and three analogue soundchannels. First it's being used to play 'cracked' games - you swap them with your friends in school and soon a 'group' forms.
After a while playing games becomes too boring, so you notice those colorful little 'intros' in front of the cracked games, where different crackers/groups announce in a bouncing scrolltext under their colorful logo that the copyprotection was really easy to remove and that they send greetings to their fellow crackers.
So you want to do that yourself. Pretty soon you and your friends discover what they're best at - one cracks, the other one is a programmer, writing those intros, you yourself paint those colorful logos, since you hate anything that has to do with math (coding), etc.
After a while those intros get more and more complicated (we are writing the year 1986) and soon too long to be attached to the latest cracked game. So they become pure standalone showoff-programs, so-called demos.
One dude is programming graphical effects, leaving people wondering how someone can get this out of this little box, the other one is composing musing, usually influenced by the current new-wave/synthy-pop music (come on guys - how many cover-versions of "Axel F." were out there - 100?) and instead of logos, people start to paint images - still in 16 colors ...
1987: the Commodore Amiga arrives and gives parents even more headaches: first, it's more expensive, second, their son threatens to kill himself if he doesn't get one, since it's got 32 colors and 8-bit digital sound and third, after he's getting that infernal machine they never see him again (except they break open the door to his room) and school grades drop through the floor.
Once on the Amiga, the demoscene is taking off. Totally. More memory, more capabilities and even more cracked software you can use to create them.
Soon large first cracker- then pure demogroups are forming. Since there is no email yet, people stay in touch via mail or call each other - some guys have to give up school and go get a job, because they racked up phonebills of $5000+ on their parents accounts.
1988 - this is where 'copyparties' start happening big time. Basically a crackerconvention, where people meet to swap the latest cracked software. But then, democompetitions start, where people get even more competitive - 'megademos' appear - more then one disk long.
1989-1991: This is the time where people are probably having the most fun, until the police starts hunting crackers in several european countries (most of the 'scene' happened in europe) and the whole things shifts to creating demos only ...
this is basically it - after that we got too old, got our first girlfriends (far later than our 'normal' friends - as far as we were still having normal friends after that time), finished school and went off to do cg for a living ...
phew - sorry for that but, well, that was a big part of my life - I like to talk about it

Cool post Loki, cleared up a lot for me. I qas too young at the time, so I never knew about the C64s or anything like that. My first experience with a game system was the NES in the early 90s. Ahh the memories. |

She doesn't look much like the original Lara Croft, though -But, personally I always thought Lara was immensely ugly, until now

This work is unbelievable. I always thought a combination of 2D and 3D-imagery could turn out to be really cool, and you just proved it. Amazing! I love the realism of your work.
Hehe, weet je nog? Color Graphics Magzine? Die gasten geloofden niet dat Angelic Particles met de hand was gemaakt. Ook vrij lullig voor de concurrentie moet ik zeggen
