Use your artistic skills on paper first and learn some colouring techniques in Photoshop.
Experiment with the different filters and layer options. I remember when i started, it
was difficult to tranfer what i had in mind on paper to the computer. A scanner helps alot. and if you're going to draw on free hand, a "Wacom" pen would help ALOT. I use mine all the and i can't work without it.
it takes a little while until you get used to it, but after you do...No prob.
I at least, starts out with a rough sketch on paper, scan it in and if i want to colour it fast,i just create another layer over it and start colouring it.
then i select multiply on the layer options.
The result is a draving that looks like it's been drawn with colour pencils. This takes about 15 minutes. If you want a more painted look, just use the palette and the different
brushes and tools to bring ou the finished
result. this normally takes more time.
Afterwards it can be interresting to experiment with the different filters to bring out another look.
Example of fast colouring that i did:
Hope this can help in any way.

Why not get yourself used to photoshop first by experimenting with everyone's fav. tool. DODGE AND BRRRNNNN ...
Do a black and white sketch and just DODGE AND BRRRNNNN to make the whole piece look cooler. Like my Journal1.jpg.
(its at the comic corner on clan STAR'S website)
PS: Jst love sayin that .. "DODGE AND BRRRNNNN, DODGE AND BRRRNNNN DODGE AND BRRRNNNN , DODGE AND BRRRNNNN ,DODGE AND BRRRNNNN ,DODGE AND BRRRNNNN ,DODGE AND BRRRNNNN "

I have a sweet p233, 64mb ram, with a 14" monitor (with yummy encrusted dirt on it), and a cheap banshee video card, and no tablet. Oh yeah, my scanner is as valuable as garbage too

Im curious how you peeps go about creating your illustrations, what are ur restrictions ? ( a slow pc, small monitor no tablet etc )
Although im an experianced conventional artist i have difficulty creating any illustrations in photoshop that dont end up as cartoony messes.
Anyhow whats ur proceedure and how quickly do you work ? |

I've an old p200 and some other old garbage. So i'm working very slow and non-comfortable. But i knew how to tune this garbage in a super workstantion ! Hehe... and try to avoid to use a dodge/burn only. Use brushes more!

My major limitation is this stupid mouse, i need a Digital Tablet. Someday...
A good scanner? Try the Hewlett Packard 6300
or even the 6200, but the 6300 has better resolution. Check it out here: http://www.hp.com/go/scanjet

I have a pii 350 128mb, using painter 5.5 and a wacom intuos.
as for procedure, i generally draw a sketch in painter, paint it up in flat colors, then blend them together. then i'll try to add texture somehow. pics can take between 2 hours and 40 hours depending on how ambitious i am.

I have AMD K6-2 400MHz with not-enough-64Mb RAM (tho I'm buying at least 128Mb more in a week when I get my salary )
And I know that PS and everything else is shitty to use with that amount of RAM. It's like hell.
But I have Wacom PenPartner, tho I'm selling it to my friend and going to buy 8"x12" (or something like that) Wacom Intuos
And I'm going to post one pic somewhere during this week when I get it finished. |

I've got a 450mhxz with 8 gig hdd
I suck at freehand. I'll admit that now. I just haven't gotten around to defining my abilities at it. Although, i draw on the comp with the mousie pretty well
I don't use the scanner much (only if i actually drew something) But all work is done on the screen
