this is my first go at this type of method of creating and here is the fruit of my labor :

it was originally a sketch i did in biro on 5mm squired paper during a company meeting then fiddled with in photoshop...it's a little dark and i would like to do more with the rear and eye...any other comments or methods for getting it's butt to glow more?

In photoshop, just double click on an airbrush brush to edit it, and make it relatively the same shape as the green spots of the ant's abdomen (or "butt" as you called it) and paint some bright green color (just dab with airbrush) on those spots for glowing effects.

If you don't know what I mean by editing the brush, just go into your brushes palette (photoshop), and double click on any brush, and make it relatively the same width and angle as those green spots. (ex: the largest green spot you would make a brush thats on a 5 degree, or maybe 10 degree angle) You will have to make several if you want to be precise, since I see some really tiny green spots on the abdomen. So again, just dab in each spot and it should look like its glowing

Well, then just do the same technique I described, except on a layer BEHIND the color layer you have now. Then after you make some plain glowing (non dodged...just plain green), on that layer, set your airbrush to color dodge and choose a white, or yellow foreground color and paint on the 'glows'. You'll get a nice effect like the one in Dhabih's pic. I personally think the glows would look better in front of the green spots however, not behind them, but eh, if u want what's in Dhabih's pic, thats how to do it

in order to make the "butt" glow more, i would suggest adding reflective shading on the legs and background..

Looks great so far. I agree with B's suggestion. Just add some bright green lighting on the right half of the ant's legs. And for the glow, all I do is just take a large paintbrush or airbrush and turn the opacity down to about 20%, then create the lighting around the glowing sections.
