affected, I will talk to Flasher and we will try work out the problem.
Binke: yes, we are trying to secure a graphics tablet aswell as a ton of software. Gfx cards i hadn't thought of. Thanks, thats a good idea. The contest would likely be fairly open-ended(like draw an original character) so that we could maximise our entrants. (although I don't know, i always find it easier when there is less selection) Do you guys prefer open-ended or more narrowed choices. There will likely be 2 contests-one 2d and one skinning.
please please any thoughts and suggestions, tell me everything! |

First off, let me say that I *LOVE* the new design of 3dpalette. It is really well done.
As far as this contest goes -- I for one would prefer a more specific or narrowed-down subject matter. It makes for a lot less confusion, and makes it easier for the "judges". It's also a lot easier to draw if you have at least some direction (at least for me). The prizes suggested in this thread already are great ideas. I look forward to entering. I just hope Dhabih, Craig Mullins, Shane Claudle, or Funbaby don't enter
heh.

I'll check it again soon to see if it was some weird temporary problem. (though it did happen after a reboot, too.) I'm using IE 5.0
AS for the contest, I say give the contestants some freedom. Technique is only a small part of what makes a good pic. I've said this before, and I have a hunch this isn't the last time, either, but originality is king.

Hm, didn't crash now... I wonder what it was all about earlier.
Oh yeah, one last niggle: On the very first POTD page of this design, the 3d dragon, the 'next POTD' link doesn't work.
Binke's idea about giving Painter as a prize sounds great... It could use a bit of extra exposure, and I've heard some good things about Painter 6

thanks affected , ill make sure that POTD link gets fixed. To everyone else who has replied so far, thanks for the comments. I will try and secure Painter 6 as I have also heard some great things about it. As for the topic, I think we will narrow it down, but word it in such a way that you have a lot of freedom. Any suggestions as to what? I'm really keen on futuristic characters.
As for who enters well... i personally hope everyone enters. The process of the decision will be something like:
the viewers vote for their top pics, and from those picks the top 10% are forwarded to a special judge/s to decide the winner(hee, I'm tring to get a very special judge so cross your fingers)

yup...
I'd really like to see 3dpalette weed out some of there hosted sites... ie: the people who don't update for like 4 months at a time! bah thats stupid... also redesign is good.. no probs with that, but I'd also like to see it move away from quake so much... at times and while surfing through the pages it seems as if it is quake skins palatte more than 3d palette or having anything to do with art for that matter too.. maybe encompass some other genre's too... my 2 cents... latez |

Imdaking, I'm definately with you on that one. Next week we will probably be going through everything and kicking out the slackers or people who have obviously moved on. Additionally, we will be having some new people coming in, and they're good too!
As for the q3 skins, well its prorbably cause the main guy Flasher is a skinner himself and thats his interest. As for me, well I more into 2d art, and most of my news reflects that. Unfortanely i havnt been updating the last few days with news because I wasnt being accepted into the admin system, but that is all sorted out now.
thanks for the feedback, but um.., can you answer my original questions too? please? pretty please?

As for the contest, I'd recommend giving an "assignment" or at least a theme. How do you just a logo vs. a painting? It's apples and oranges.

Hi guys, I would really appreciate your thoughts on a few things:
-www.3dpalette.com recently had a site design. What do you think? What would you like to see more of on the site? And do you visit the site at all?
-We would like to have a contest probably in late January. What prizes would you like to see(bare in mind we wont be getting any big screen tvs, so be realistic)? Would you enter, and what do you think is a good topic?
I would really enjoy everyones feedback on these question, so please answer at least a few of them ok?
cheers |

AS I mentioned on the forus over at 3dpalette, I've bumped into a small problem with it: It seems to crash IE every time I visit the site... Sometimes IE crashes before the page is even fully loaded, and sometimes you can actually browse the site a little, maybe see the POTD before it goes 'pfft'... What kinds of scripts and special stuff are you using?

I agree with the theme idea, something like "portrates", "abstract", "scenary", etc.
As for prizes art or anatomy books would be good (Traditional art books, they tend to work just as well in the digital field, and most digital art books stink), prints or posters of art by Dhabih or Mullins would be nice. |

3dpallette's new look is a superimprovement! I first found 3d pallette quite few months ago, had some excellent artist's there, but what turned me off is it was never getting updated with new artwork. So I kinda just dismissed it, I will definetely havta submit art there.
I spose a theme would be best for the competition, I like the create your own
character idea, but maybe that will not be so good for everyone. how about setting the theme on an existing game, and we have to help with an "add on" for it. So we design new concept work, like a totally new character design, or level design ( just a room or whatever, relax ), or a promotional magazine / cover artwork. We all keep to the main theme of that game, and still get plenty of freedom. Or maybe thats a totally shite idea.. probly too strict again, ah i dunno, sorry, best i could bloody do, ok!?
as for the prize, funfetus had a great idea with apples and oranges, but since I know santa's already got me some of those.. personally I'd like a graphic tablet cause I'm fed up of using a mouse, but I wouldn't complain about getting a copy of Painter6 either.
merry xmas!

Please, I think there's enough of an emphasis on games as it is over there... How about something that's NOT game-related for a change?

Thanks guys, after much debate, Flasher and I have decided that as of Jan 1., 3dpalette will become known as "horticulture art."
