What's the best way to create metallic armor? Do you take an already existing metal texture and draw highlights over it? I cant seem to do that properly, im trying to do bevel type shapes on it too.

Try painting the armor first, without any textures, and then start overlaying the texture on top of it, on new layers set to, say, overlay. :P

The most important part of doing metal is to get the reflections and shading right. Metal reflects light differently than a matte surface -- study whatever metal you happen to have around. Look at your bumper and hubcaps, etc.

Check out the robot in http://funhousedigital.com/fb-tlrs.jpg to see how I handled it. It's not perfect, but it may give you a general idea.

He has a very good tutorial on making q2 skins, including how to make good looking metal...
