I have been looking for a while for books, and tutorials that teach you shading techniques. I have major problems using the burn tool in photoshop. This becomes a real problem when trying to scan my sketches of faces in and turn them digital. I need to use the burn tool or something else to shade the pictures. Can someone please help me with this problem.
Thanks,

To be a bit more specific, I am talking about shading one side of the face. Shading the nose, above and below the eyes, shading clothing etc. I'm sure there is someone out there that knows what i'm talking about.
Thanks,

i don't know.... i find the burn tool to be too inconsistent (i have a tablet and some parts get darker/lighter..) i would suggest doing a base dark line and smudging it... it's working pretty good for me now... |

The most important thing to do if using the burn tool is set the opacity quite low, like between 6-18% and use a feathered brush. Im working on a pic right now, and Im finding that the best thing to do is just use the airbrush, again set low(8%) on the multiply section. Choose a colour that is perhaps slightly redder than the original 'flat' Ive found this gives a more realistic shading, and plus you dont get that flat and plastic look. After youve done that, then maybe use the burn and dodge tool for added detail. Ive posted a pic of what I did on a face. http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Canvas/8967/face.jpg
-Note the drawing is not mine, I got it off the icewind dale website to specifically practice my coloring.
If you want the site, i posted it in a topic titled "read this you bums" |

I guess it would help a great deal invest in a tablet. Donations anyone? hehe. I guess I will have to save some money. Maybe a Wacom Graphire 4x5 for now. Thanks for the help!

A small bit of info. The slight redening immi is doing is realistic because of how light passes through skin. Hold a bright light to your thumb or palm and your hand turns bright red. Not all of the light that hits one's face reflects off instantly or absorbed into the surface... some continues into the skin and bounces off blood vessels under the skin. This causes the red.
I almost never use the dodge/burn tools for this reason. Just darkening a surface doesn't always make it look right.
This effect is one of the reasons why realistic human flesh done on 3d models is so hard.

So....Cyber, do you use the airbrush or something to create the shading or what? Like with an pressure of 8% or something. Thanks for your help on my topics cyber.

Goddamnit ppl!
Use the airbrush tool dammit!
At low-pressure and "multiply" mode. Choose the colors yourself. Then again, you can change the opacity on the dodge tool too.
Cheers! |

The Burn tool increases the saturation and lowers the lightness. So it does it more accuratly than darken the area. At least the burn layer option mode does this. The tool does this best when set to shadows I believe. |

Artic: Nice idea about buying an airbrush-related book. I think I'll give a look at one of them.. sounds pretty interesting.
