Airbrushing in Painter is missing the whole point -- if you're just going to airbrush, you ought to stick with Photoshop.
Here's my basic method:
http://www.funhousedigital.com/temp/circle01.jpg -- Paint in block colors with Loaded Oils brush.
http://www.funhousedigital.com/temp/circle02.jpg -- Use Sable Chisel Tip Water brush to blend. Start out with a large brush size, and progressively get smaller.
http://www.funhousedigital.com/temp/circle03.jpg -- Smooth with Just Add Water brush. (Opacity lowered from default to about 15 to 20 percent.)
This is just the BASIC method, though...I often use other tools to get different textures and effects. I do use the airbrush for very small details, and sometimes for hair.
It looks like Jason Manley of Icewind Dale is using a similar technique, but probably starting out with a different brush (maybe one of the chalks) and maybe blending with something else. Very nice stuff! Thanks for pointing it out!
