Ok people, I've spent about 2 weeks on this picture. It's my first *real* photoshop pic that I've done. I've been mucking around with photoshop for about 2 months, but I've been drawing ALL my life (this relates to the discussion of traditional art affecting digital results.)
I scanned in the sketch and then coloured it with the mouse (I don't have a tablet).
Well, here it is, it's a little big (about 160K) but please bear with me. What do ya think? Oh and go easy on me cuz I'm only 15 http://jasoncentral.virtualave.net/Dragon.jpg

Here is the original sketch: http://jasoncentral.virtualave.net/dragonSK.jpg

PS- The water is *meant* to be all electrified

Looks rather nice actually. Not realistic, but very nice all the same. Besides, it's a dragon... who ever said Dragons were realistic to begin with?

Anyways...

A couple things that bother me:

The smoke could of been better done. Looks TOO photoshop-made. Maybe blend it out more close to the top of the image. There's a lot of motion in the drawing, and the smoke is just rising up like there's a slight wind. Also, the photoshop assorted brush "flares" look too sharp next to the very smoothed water surface. Try adding a little blur to them... just a little. The dragon also looks a bit flat. Each scale is well shaded, but overall it looks like it's a cardboard cut out. Needs more shape to the overall body.

Good work. Damn I wish I was born a few years younger.

Thanx Cyber. I agree with you on the smoke, I wasn't too satisfied with it myself. I'll probably go back and fix it up cuz it shouldn't take long. And the thing about the flatness, I didn't shade the whole dragon as one object because I was afraid that doing this would mess up the smaller details. I don't feel confident enough to shade it without making it look crap. Well, thanx for the tips. I'll keep them in mind when I do pics in the future.

Try shading with the airbrush on a layer above the dragon, or save the .psd file as is and then save as another name so you can work on the shading with out fear of messing up and loosing it all.

All your posts are just mindless ramblings that are absolutely incoherent in every way. I suggest you lay off the "vodka" before posting.. I for one am annoyed.

Jason... for a 15-year-old kid you're talented (I hate using that word). Even though it's cool, the coloring shoulda been better. Too many strong and contrast colors, it won't make it moody. But that's my taste tho'. As long as you're happy with the result, it should be fine.

Cheers!

Spike: I know what you mean about the colours. I didn't really have a plan for the pic. Mainly just to get the hang of colouring and photoshop in general. It sorta just came out very bright and well, I don't mind it. All the purples and blues sorta add to the "fantasy" feel to it. I would have done it dark and moody, but I didn't feel that it complemented the dragons pose and actions. But since you mentioned it, I just might do a sinister dragon....hmmm....
Thanx for your input,
-Jason

well optical person you,
if your asking me, then hoy!

im not very good at explaining this...hehe,maybe ill layout the steps in pictures in another thread,a tutorial. hoho

take the straight line tool and draw a whole bunch of missmatched all over the place lines in a crisscrossing pattern(kinda)..

then take the eraser tool set to paintbrush and on a large softedge around 50-70opacity brush and erase around the edges off the lines to make the shape you want...moo/..there..

now take the airbrush set to like 2-4 opacity and make some cool colors on it...
and also make some colored lines with the straight line tool....

the take the dodge and burn and make some light patches all over the sparklies....then blur it.... there....now make some more sparklies and more and more and muhahahahah and more and more mad sparles about the world and more and whooohooo and .......your done.......told you im not good at explaining...
