I just started dabbling in Painter (Classic), and I was wondering if anyone knows how to draw straight lines? :P Like, if you hold Shift in Photoshop, it draws it straight.. is there a "hotkey" like that in Painter?
I have Painter 6.0 as well, but I hate it :P

Painter isn't about drawing straight lines, which is probably why you don't like it. The interface is also a bit odd for most. It's really designed for the traditional artist who wants to do stuff with the computer, so it also is great for those with a less exacting style (like most painters, and traditional artist do with the exception of pen artists maybe.) If you're used to photoshop (which really is more of a design/editing tool than a drawing tool like Painter is, hence the names "Photoshop" vs "Painter") Painter can certainly seem like a POS program.
It all comes down to personal preference though.

What am I, this board's official Painter consultant?
SPiKE.COM had it right -- you can check "straight lines" on the Brush Control palette, which is accessible by pressing Ctrl-5.
OR, you can press "v" to go into straight-line mode, and "b" to go back to freehand mode.
Good luck.

Heh, I am a traditional artist
I was a concept artist for id Software (ya know, the makers of quake/doom/etc..) for 4 years. But, there is a use for straight lines in traditional mediums. Take a look at Craig Mullins' work, you will notice MANY straight lines/use of perspective, and he is an avid Painter user.
I was just wondering if there was a way to do it.. I wasn't putting down the program.
I don't like Painter 6 because for some reason it doesn't detect the pressure sensitivity of my tablet, and I've tried EVERYTHING! I have an Intuos 9x12, not exactly a "lower-end" tablet .. soo .. :P
Anyway, FUNBABY, HELP ME!

I dunno if Classic has this, but I have version 4 and you can reach the function this way:
Look in the menu for Window/Controls. Check this dialogue for the "Drawing Style"... There should be Freehand and Straight Lines.
But if it isn't there look for it in Help or RTFM (Read The F-- Manual)!
Cheers! |
