well, it's been a week since I put it 'out there' so to speak. 3dpalette and gameart were silent, this forum also silent on the subject.
but I am undeterred.
I'm going to get feedback on this pic by hook or by crook.

just say something, anything.

Umm, the hair is extremely well done in my opinion. I also like the bacground.. but the eyes are what draw my attention.. they dont look right.. a little crooked if you will... And the finger... in the mouth..... uh.....
okay....
*takes away the crack pipe from Muzman, NO MORE FOR YOU! *
the lips look a little strange too... at the top, it looks somewhat flared... or... unfinished.
thats my 1.5 cents.... cuz im cheap like dat =) |

Overall, i think the image is quite strong. The shading of the face generally looks good, and the background has been sufficiently blurred to fit in well with the portrait, and not look out of place.
Although the eyes are a bit large, I like them. Theres something appealing about them.
Things that could probably use fixing:
next time, make the face a bit more centralised, or have both eyes showing fully. it detracts from the image, to have the right eye cut off. Also with the eyes, try add a bit more colour to them. Maybe some yellows and some browns. Also, you forgot the little pink things(tear ducts?) in the corners of eyes. The flatness is something that steadily detracts from the overall image, basically the the colours are too flat, and plasticy. it kinda looks a bit like a poser model. im still trying to figure this out myself with my images, but i try to airbrush some colours in over the flats which gives it a bit more variety when I dodge and burn.
the eyebrows also look strange, and rushed over. More detail like the individual hairs rather than a once over with the airbrush or burn tool would look way better. The lips could use some more gloss and shine, aswell as some fixing up(the part underneath the centre of the nose looks odd) Whiten the teeth aswell. I like where the hair parts, you seem have to (inadvertantly?) captured it quite well. Id put some more shine on the rest of the hair tho.
-try flipping the image horizontally, I read this on craig mullins site and it lets you see the image in a whole new way, and enables you to correct it. When I tried this on your image, I found the jaw didnt look symetrical.
Anyways, good pic, I hope this criticism was helpful
-i will post your pic later with what i did, i gotta put it on a website 1st, so hold on |

The Background looks good. I don't really like the rest though. |

cool
it's looking like we (everyone so far and me) are seeing the same stuff.
The eyes still bug me too; kinda dead looking. I think that's because the framing of the pic is as if it has been cut off on one side (ie, the vanishing point and framing of the face are somewhat off to the right). I intended it this way but I think it makes the eyes look like they aren't focussed on anything. I may try and move one around a bit.
secondly, the jaw is meant to be off centre. It's supposed to be kind of a 'cigar grin', but with a finger, if you know what I mean.
She was supposed to be wearing matt lipstick too, so it's a bit dull.
I'm not a big fan of whitening teeth either, 'cause teeth aint white.
The colouring is a bit funny, but I fiddled with the contrast and levels for a bit to try and get a sort of glare-y yellowy look in a post holocaust kinda way. Maybe it works, I dunno.
Some detail has been lost in the reduction and compression; it looks a lot better full size (1979x2800). I was planning on printing it.
The background is a hack; I rendered it in Bryce and blurred it. So if that's the best thing about it I'm in trouble.
the thing that bugs me still is, as immi says, looking at it side on or from a distance. Stuff starts sticking out that shouldn't.
particularly that right cheek. That version immi did has a bit more shading on the low side of it and it makes a huge difference.
cool, I was gonna just move on but I'll probably finish it off now.
here's a bit of the full pic too; showing some detailed stuff and hacked stuff that's there. but I don't know how to make it prominent at lower res without making it too prominent
it's about 45k http://fluxion.ii.net/dkbig.jpg

What sticks out at me the most is that the eyes are too HIGH on the head. Try dropping them down so that the tops of the eyes are about where the bottoms of the eyes are now. You may also want to reshape them a bit more realistically. I think the irises are also too large...
The nose could also use some work -- the bridge seems far too sharp, and the end lacks form. I've tried to fix it up a bit. I hope this isn't too presumptuous. :P http://www.funhousedigital.com/temp/dk1-nosemod.jpg
Good luck with it.

heh
thanks lads, all round.
I quite like the nose; it's from a reference and it's spot on.
I too also thought the brow line was a bit high, but changing it has little to no effect on anything or makes it worse. unless the shape of the head is completely redone I think it's staying.
I think that elongated look is more of a highlight and shading thing, plus cutting the chin back a bit helps too.
As it is, I think the tension in the right cheek isn't dramtic enough; the crease isn't far off where it would be if the mouth was relaxed; and the mouth ain't relaxed.
it'd stop that right eye from looking a bit bugged out too.
I'll push it around some more and see what happens (in between doing the new 'project')
