I use Dreamweaver to design the bulk of my pages, then I code the JavaScript, Perl, and DHTML by hand with either Notepad, or PICO (unix) .. either one

Fuzy Tech, early word I've heard on Go Live is not good, I hear it seems like it was kinda rushed out and just doesn't do things that well. Haven't gotten to try it out yet myself though.

For all you folks saying "ooh, watch me use my WYSIWYG" that's all fine and good till your client asks you to change something in the code that involves knowing HTML. Now that's the trick, isn't it?

If you want to use an editor than that's great, just freakin' learn HTML first. I do use an editor (Dreamweaver) but I can also code a page from top to bottom in Notepad if I have to. There's nothing worse than a "designer" who can't even add a cell to a table without opening up his WYSIWYG program. You might even have a client ask why something was coded a certain way or what a section of code does, believe me, it happens. For those who might say "I'm a designer, not a programmer, I don't need to learn HTML" you couldn't be more wrong. A BIG part of designing for the web is knowing it's limitations, and knowing what HTML can and can't do is a really big part of that. Put the mouse down and try using that thing with all the keys on it for a change. If anything it'll just make you better...

I totally agree with you Fig! If you don't know at least the basics then yer stuck! The program is in total control, not you. Plus, that's why these people are hiring you, cuz you supposedly know something about web designing. This means HTML coding....DUH! Just like a graphics designer, if you can't draw on paper and you don't know the basics, then learn. Knowing how to drawing on a computer and apply filters all day long just doesn't cut it. NOt the real world at least.

FIG: By the way, that's a kewl site you got there. I'm still trying to learn java myself.

wysiwyg editors suck dont even go there learn html. And use Allaires Homesite, hands down the best out there. Because it teaches as well as performs.

I've heard good things about Homesite, but personally, I prefer good ol' notepad. My webpage is some 220+ hand typed pages of .html, tedious, but the result is pretty damn good. My next page I'll hopefully be able to do in PHP3 or some cgi script to make updating easier. For now, notepad suits me fine.

Thanks FuzyTech, glad you like the page. I don't know much javascript myself, just enough to borrow from elsewhere and hack into it to get it working the way I want. I'm in the early stages of a redesign actually, looking to combine HTML and Flash into something that should be rather interesting, we shall see... :-)

For web design I would recommend macromedia Dreamweaver 2.0 for HTML and Adobe Photoshop 4-5.5 for graphics. And of course if you do not know html, htmlgoodies.com is a good place to start learning

Well IMHO Allaires Homesite is the best HTML making program for normal people. I prefer it because I can type my own code there, but the program checks and fixes my typos. I think that using notepad (which I've used a LOT at the beginning) makes you to really LEARN HTML code. I have those DreamWeawer, FrontPage lame shit programs. Well to me it's a question about honour, not about how fast I am. Some might say that it's lame to complain about how you make the HTML, it's only the design that matter, but IMO it's not the only thing that matters. Well it's easy for me to say, because I have a lot of experience in web design, but still I suggest you all amateurs out there, to really LEARN that HTML, and not to fell that low to use those point-and-click-it's-ready programs. Whine to me, I know you will, but I don't care. I'm just telling that I think that is lame to use those programs. It's kinda same like you make a damn good picture with filters in PS. Well ok, most of people probably won't even see it, but I think that there's something to do with selfrespect also. I couldn't respect me if I would have make a picture with filtherlameshit. Of course they are useful, but godddamn you gotta to have more talents than using filters.
