Whenever I make a picture and I export it to a gif, I can never change the background transparency. I think it is set on grey or black as default. Can someone please help me out?

If you're using Photoshop (which you should be **grin**) you just take your image and any area you want to be transparent should be a certain color that won't occur anywhere in the image that you don't want to be transparent. Basically from there you just go to File>Export>Gif89 bleh bleh .. and then change the transparency color to the one that you used (I usually use something like magenta or some other horid color from the puce family hehehe). Save and enjoy the splendour of transparent gifs. Bask in the glory of having learned a new technique <j/k>

Or, you could just select the part of the image you want not-transparent, make a new file and set it on transparent background, paste, export using gif89, and voila: transparency! |

Ah, everything is soo much easier with Photoshop 5.5 (actually it's a lot more easier with the added ImageReady 2.0). You only need to erase the part you wan't to be transparent. Wee!
Cheers!

You might also want to convert to Indexed Color mode first, it'll help you control the image size by picking how many colors you'll have in your gif. Don't forget to save the PSD before you convert though, since it'll flatten your image.
And yeah, ImageReady rocks

Create new chanel (alpha1), select area, you like to be non transparient end erase it from chanel (the wite color - this will be non transparient, black color - this you will never see after making GIF). After that convert image to Indexed color and save it like a gif. |
