Do you mean making the poses look right or coming up with what pose to put someone in?

Both!

I know a guy who uses poser to make the poses look right... But I dont have that program.

I know what I want, but I just cant make them look right.

It's just a lot of practice, really. You need to think about how the weight is distributed in each pose you draw. You should also understand the way muscles and joints behave.
Try going out and drawing some really quick sketches of people.

If ya want some interesting reading on anatomy etc, try looking up some of Giovanni Civardi's books, aswell as Anatomy Lessons From The Great Masters. Should be at Amazon.com.

In addition to everything said above, try to think of the human for as a real simple shape of cylinders and circles. Sketch out the limbs and torso as ovals in proportion to each other and once that looks right, then go over it with a more defined body structure. Check out some anatomy for artists books and practice like crazy.

i've found that drawing cartoons (disney style) really helped my realistic figure drawing, since a cartoon simplifies the body to the bare essential shapes. but thats just me.

When it comes to anatomy it'll tend to get tricky to positions you never drew before.

Sketching like crazy from a playboy mag or something is a good idea to get some shapes and anatomy right.

Although, as Dhabih said, it's easier and a bucket-of-load lot effectivier [excuse my english but I'm Swedish ] to "chop" the body into basic shapes. I.e. spheres, cylinders, blocks, pears, apples...

(But the before mentioned one is a lot funnier).

If you want to learn poses, go check out Barnes and Noble - if they have one near you. They had some great books when I went there tonight. And pretty cheap too.
