hey man, i am a fellow artist, and i am utterly lost. your stuff is crazy. i do lots of PS stuff, but noting like yours. and my first question is about the infamous "PALATE", (PARDON THE SPELLING).
does it make a big difference? like i scan al my scetches in and trace over them with the mouse. is that a slow, bad way to do it?
like i am not a professional, and i don't have $500 to get one.
another thing is i use Photoshop 5.5. is there a diffrence, cause u said u use 3.something. any advice would be greatly apriciated.

sorry to have to tell you this man, but ps 5.5's features are no comparison to ps 3.0(hence the numbers-10 is worst, 5 is ok, and 1 is absolutely the best)Unfortunately 5.5 is practically useless. Your best bet would be to buy adobe photoshop 3.0 or 3.5. Luckily, i handily have one available and becuase you are a fellow artist, i would be willing to sell it to you for a meagre $500(maybe a bit less) Contact me if interested.

There is nothing wrong with Photoshop 5.5 for someone who has never used 3.x I have used 3.0 - 5.5 and just outright dismissing 5.5 and telling people it isn't worth the time because you didn't like it is wrong.

I like 5.5 a lot and so do most of the people I know in the Comic Book industry. I worked for Todd McFarlane Productions for a while and the ease of use of 5.5 made everyone in the art department pretty happy with the upgrade....

I don't like using Netscape Communicator over plain Netscape, but I don't tell newbies to only get Netscape.

I'm sorry if I am coming off harsh, but it seems like a very few people are making a very big noise about how bad PS 5.5 is, and it isn't really productive.

Why exactly is 3.x better than 5.0.2 or 5.5? What makes it better, sorry for the ignorance here, but i've never used anything besides 4.x and 5.0.2

I used 4.0 5.0 and 5.5
well its like comparing notepad and frontpage for editing HTML. In notepad you know exactly how your code works and and its functions, and in Front page its made it easier to do the final product but you have no idea how it works, and HTML is all messed up. So i think 3.x and 4.x have simple old tools that you know exactly what they do, and later vers have all those FANCY filters/effects/tools. Though if you're into web design or anime or cartoons, you'll like the latest features better.

I just got PS 5.0 and I can't find the smudge tool. I'm so disappointed! I mean, what was wrong with the smudge tool? Did it annoy someone in programming? I want it back! Is it there and I just can't find it?
Do tell! I feel so... *sniff* let down.

RE: Smudge Tool.... if you click on some of your other tools, like the blur tool, you will find the smudge tool is another tool you can pick. Most of the slots on your tool bar house more than one tool.

The smudge tool is there... A lot of the buttons in the tools palette actually contain many tools.. Just click on the blur tool , and hold the mouse down.

I use PS since '94 (I think?) I started with
3.04 and got every other version that came out after that one, and I must say it only got better (ok 5 was a little buggy hehe but it was cool) and now that I got 5.5 it rockes again. So I guess u have 2 get used 2 it man,

What are the upgrades in PS 5.5? I have been using 5.0.2 for some time and it's great!!
I would like to know if the 100 for the upgrade is worth it or am I wasting money?
(by the way I'm 16 and into drawing stuff not into web design.)

One new thing about 5.5 is the inclusion of Adobe ImageReady. This is great if your work is going on the web and not print. It saves you a couple hundred dollars.

My personal reasons for not using Photoshop 5 is that they just added a whole lot of features that just made illustration for me a lot more tedious and slow. The main feature that I totally wish I can turn off is their whole new way of copying and pasting and selection. In 5 every time you paste something it creates another layer. Selecting and moving selections also just got too fancy and added extra steps that slow the process down. Photoshop 5 is great for web design, graphic design and these kinda things, but for illustration, I prefer Photoshop 3.5 sicne its nice and simple.

I am totally with you on the selection systems in Photoshop. I have both v3.x and 4.x on my PC and I use 3 much more, because of the easier selecting.

Maybe because I am too used to the old way...

I've been using photoshop since the good old days of 3.0 and personally I think ps 4.0 was the best. It kept most of the good features from 3.0 but didn't have some of the confusing/annoying parts of 5.0.
I'm using 5.0 now but personally I wouldn't recoment it to new users... I actually find it more difficult to use.
Maybe thats just me

I've never used any version below 4.0, but When I moved from ver. 4 to 5.0, I didn't notice any annoying changes. Just good ones, like the history palette, and the way the text isn't rendered right off, and can be edited afterwards.
