There's only B movies, no other alphabetic terms really. The B stands for budget, and refers to movies made on a small budget. It's also used as B being the letter after A. A being a good movie, B being not as good. |

I'm pretty sure I heard the "Z" movies term before too. I believe it's used for movies like Troma movies. (Toxic Avenger, Tromeo and Juliette, Class of Nukem High) that REally play up the classic "B" movie things and reach a new level of bad (ie. so bad it's good)
but that's just a guess and an I think. So you can ignore that if you want. |

It's actually to do with the old concept of the double-feature at the cinema.
You'd have the "Feature" film (ie the big one, the one you really paid to see) which was often referred to as the "A" movie, cos it was shown first.
After the "A" movie, the cinema managers would put on the "B" movie. This was typically a shoddy piece of crap that neither the studio nor the theatre could shift, so the only way to get punters to pay to see it was by tacking it on to the back of a popular movie, and splitting the revenue.
The term "B movie" was soon taken to be synonymous with crappy, low budget, non-commercial movies, and later with cult classics.

oh, almost forgot. "Z" movies are just an extension of the idea of B movies being crappy.
Imagine a film that was soooo bad it was shown 26th... that's your Z movie
Basically, the term "Z movie" has no real historical background, unlike "B movie" which was actually a proper term.
