trying to paint some buildings, the black and white mask start helped some. Usually I can't get a pic of a building going at all

Cool light design Lemur.
Here are some ships done with the B/W mask start aswell.. i like that approach. lets you fiddle with the layout very fast.

a black and white mask is when you paint a black and white image and use the resulting areas as masks to put tones and color into.
but more important. it forces you to think in the simplest statement possible; black and white. if your image reads in pure black and white, there is a good chance it will read well with tones added. provided you keep the original b/w image in mind all the time.
But it allso, at least for me, tends to push me towards a very silhouet heavy image.. so as with everything. dont overdo it
