I'm in Hong Kong again to renew my visa. We were walking around shopping, and somehow the subject of Tina's name came up. Tina is the English name that a co-worker of hers gave her years ago when she first worked in Hong Kong. Tina didn't know any English then, so she didn't know any better to say yes or no to that suggestion. Now that she's learning more English, she began to wonder if Tina is the English name that suits her the most.

So, I made some suggestions, and we're wondering if any of you sijun kids have good suggestions for her. Tina said that the winner will get a very special picture of her exclusively in the email if his/her suggestion is picked.

Anyway, her last name is Tu, so go ahead, come up with some good names that suits her. Most of you have seen pics of her, and have read me writing about what kind of a person she is, so you have more than enough to go by. For those of you that have never seen her pics, just visit my website and look at the photography section.

My suggestions so far:

Faye
Janice
Michelle

(There are lots of cool names, but they don't necessarily suit her. For example, I love literature/mythology type names like
Ophelia, Juliette...etc, but they really don't fit her.)

Tina is actually a very good and short name.

But maybe Lilith or Eve.

Tanya.

would she be keeping her last name?

"Tina Tu" sounds a little awkward doesn't it? I liked Faye though...that's a nice name, sort of innocent/feminine, yet sophisticated sounding at the same time...

Well, her last name MIGHT change to Chang after she marries me, but I haven't asked her yet, so. . .. But, I don't care about that tradition. I think women should keep their last name as they should keep their individuality even married.

well heres some other names.

agnes - greek for pure (which i really like too btw)

alina - which having arabic origins probably means noble

bianca - meaning white or pure or something like that

elena - which is apparently the lithuanian version of helen

fiona - gaelic and means fair

helen - from the greek helios meaning sun. the name has thus acquired the meaning bright shining one the name is most commonly associated with helen of troy, whose capture, by the trojan prince, paris began the trojan war.
dutch from the greek helios meaning sun /shining (ive copied this outta a book ^__^)

julia - female form of julius meaning soft-haired

leah - meaning weak eyes or languid

louise - french meaning famous

lydia - greek meaning a native of lydia (whatever ) . an ancient city-state in aisa-minor (responsible for the first coinage) known for luxurious living and perfumes.

marylin - mixture of mary and ellen ???!!!

natalie - natalis dies meaning birthday. relates particularly to christ's birthday and thus christmas day.

penelope - greek meaning weaver (possible nickname pen pen!)

sabrina - meaning bordermark

tia - normally used as an abbreviation for names ending in -tia like letitia, now a name in its own right!

veronica - from the latin vera icon meaning true image
(personal recommendation )

I was always fond of Sylvia and Evelyn for girl's names.

Sylvia Tu...

hmm

I guess you propably should go for a short first name to match the last.

Jane Tu sounds nice.

I have to agree with some posters here though, Tina is a very nice name too.

Tina works just fine! I wouldn't change it - it's simple, but nice - everyone can pronounce it and IMHO it suits her.

Faye, Janice & Michelle sound all too fancy ... and some of the other suggestions sound like porn star names ...

Wow, there's like, overwhelming number of you that likes Tina. Is it because that's the name you knew her as? What if you didn't know her name and have only seen her pictures to begin with.

Her Chinese name is Tu Zhou-Hwei, and it's too much of a pain in the ass to just use that since most people will butcher it when they pronounce it, and it means squat in the English context. Besides, she NEVER liked Zhou-Hwei. Her parents weren't exactly creative, artistic, or even intellectual. It's a lame name that any peasant could have. I mean, if she was internationally famous like Zhang Zi-yi, then I could see a point in keeping her Chinese name, but she was just a small time actress/model, and only famous in the city of Fuzhou. Tina is just some random name her co-worker gave her when she worked in Hong Kong, and it's not even in any of her official documents. Her legal name in the United States will take effect when she fills out forms in the future, and since it hasn't happened yet, there's time to find a name that SHE likes.

There are some really awesome suggestions so far. How about a poll on what people likes the most so far in the suggestions?
