Appreciate it guys thank you. not so bad yourselves both you samhell and durgldeep, impressive what you do with storytelling and imagery to the same mentioned.
Sure takes a lot of work to flesh out a story.

wow page 13, celebration? Twisted Evil

Made something quick today, gotta squeeze the time every now and then. Better be testing things out with the time given.

Yep, page 13 - just in time for halloween! Very Happy

Got sidetracked again (making some progress in... 'rig theory'?).
Back to hoplites... Interesting reading re equipment - and Greco-Persian wars,
etc...

Overview here:

Spears were between 2 and 2.75 metres long...

I started a different speed model session over at cgsociety, this time it was to try to follow a picture and then to set up the same composition as in the reference picture.
Sure gotta admit that it was a lot more difficult than what I thought it would be, a fun exercise nevertheless....

I used 2 hours for modelling the scene and +45 minutes to set up colors, camera and such.

Here's the ref picture:

Nice one, whom. Interesting that the reference pic looks almost 3d too
(though maybe that's a mental 'cue' set by the 3d image - or something). Smile

Not sure why I'm dreading Roman/Greek architecture, it's clean/straightforward,
as you say. Maybe just overthinking it; am visualizing a 16 by 16 metre
enclosed coutyard (default grid); as good a place to start as any, I guess.

Good inspiration there (might drop everything else and dive in). Smile

Thank you. Smile
Yeah I chosed reference that had perspective in them, there are 5 others to choose from in the thread I made.
When it comes to inspiration may I suggest looking at the "Spartacus" series. Well, I guess it depends on what kind of building you are doing. Senate political stuff or the homes of the Romans?
... I would go with pillars and a fountain in the middle and then some steps to a elevated area. Damn now I am getting inspired by Roman stuff again. Smile

I looked at the first couple of pages, good that I saved some of those links with tinypic. Usually I keep changing the directiories on my site.
I wonder what happened to gotnospoons?

Testing different effects with nodes, achieved by displacing the edges with cloud noise. Hmm not sure, I might get some tips from the one who made the tutorial...

Thanks. Research underway. Smile

Spartacus- Gladiator War [National Geographic dramatization]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anBFk70OChM

Much shorter and far less tedious:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spartacus

That'll do for intro/overview (the history part). Will see what episodes I can
find on YT. Smile

Hehe, it's in ur blood? Smile

Sidetrack: the video (above) made me think I shouldn't have removed the
forearm protection (from the model); didn't see any in period artwork so
removed the 'bracers' - vambrace, I guess it's called (terminology is
coming back to me, heh). Also reminded me that armour is worn over a
tunic; especially a metal curiass wouldn't be next to the skin; and a bunch
of other things.

Hmmmm... not sure I'm ready for fountain/water issues?

gotnospoons secretly told me he's really cheesed that ur pics keep
disappearing and he's never coming back... Very Happy

okay seriously, I have no idea; he should come back for halloween cuz it's
fun to do creepy stuff... Wondering if I have enough steam to convert and
rig that skeleton (upthread), guess we'll see. Smile

Nice rock, ZM - nice blog too (now that I thought to look).

Spartacus search took an unexpected turn; wasn't familiar with the TV
series so didn't know about Andy Whitfield (diagnosed with cancer after
season one):

"Be Here Now" -- The Andy Whitfield Story Feature Documentary Trailer,
by Lilibet Foster
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NogZVtKyUpE

whom, re Roman, actually I'm doing Greek architecture, etc. Spartacus was
Thracian (generally east of Greece) so it all ties together, cool. Lots of
interesting reading:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Greece

Been resisting pottey stuff too; dunno why, it's so easy.

Pottery of ancient Greece
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_pottery

Again, just vertex groups/colour blocking (will worry about painting later):

ZM, real nice clean crisp version, looks awesome. Smile you should post more. Twisted Evil

durgldeep, yea I was and have been a big fan of the Spartacus series, it was a tragedy with Andy. The new actor couldn't really meet the acting that Andy did.
The pottery looks awesome. You know you could still have a fountain with no running water in the background, but hmm then again I think they had running water all the time during the Roman Empire....

Trying to do something everyday, even if simple stuff just experimenting....

This is soon the only thread worth visiting, speed modeling over at cgsociety has turned to shit as those activities are only popular once an items is interesting to someone, ahh anyway hard to explain.... Evil or Very Mad

hehe, was thinking the same thing earlier today, whom (re do something
every day); didn't want to mention it because ur schedule is so tight;
flashback to the daily drawing thread... Smile

feeling like I'm in a candy store, so much interesting stuff (my tabs atm):

Agreed the new guy (Liam McIntyre) doesn't seem to have the same...
'something' as Whitfield - though I've only seen one episode (could only
scrounge one off YouTube). Season one is available on DVD, will see if I
can find it. Guess they've decided not to do a fourth season:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spartacus_%28TV_series%29

Meanwhile, watchable documentary re ancient Greece (even though the
screen is tiny):

Nice whom - I want a medusa with mechanical arms for hair. Very Happy

Latest discovery: export Sculptris mesh/texture to Blender (large blue sphere,
bit more than half way down the page):
http://drpetter.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=sculptris&action=print&thread=227

Unwrap is a bit strange but hey, it works; transparency is half a hexagon that I
forgot about:

Rigging, yay! And it's about time. Very Happy Which opens the door to animation - I can
see it now: all your old models springing to life, hehe.

Thanks re character; people will be sick of it by now (was only a paint test
anyhow). Been practicing unwrap in Blender too (feels like old news already).
Currently another round of anatomy (review). Gets easier every time. Smile

Am stuck in non-art stuff atm (will be back like the tide, hehe). Actually the
character's Greek. The original is more interesting (to me): "The architecture
of Ancient Rome grew out of that of Greece..."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Greek_architecture

Model's looking good, whom. Re Lucas, am thinking Disney can do it justice, if
anyone can - ?

aaron2, have you tried 3d? Sculptris (freeware) is very user-friendly. Smile

ZM, I followed your advice and added some wine decals. Smile

Still adding stuff and fixing the uv's, thinking about to add some animals and such... Think I really need more detail to the bricks up close the camera. Will take some time.....

Thanks samhell ^^

Whom that's nice ! For the bricks you could try to make a displacement map out of your texture, tesselate the walls and apply the displacement map
