I haven't posted anything in a great while. I will try to do better. Here's a sketch I did after work today.

Samsonsreaper: I love the variation in the brushwork and edges.

Lemur: Awesome still life. I've been trying to more of these myself lately. I know what you mean by the midtonesI've been trying to take the advice of the great Spoogedemon for years now and I feel like I always learn something new every time I read over his old posts.

Nice ones Leszek.

bleh. experimenting. I can't seem to grasp the idea of speedpainting very well without going at it with more and more details like an idiot. I guess the more speedpainting, the better we get right?

edit: here's another for today. Trying to work with the brush more in a timely manner -_- need more practice

Nice experimentation Leszek. I really like the color and design of the character.

Working towards the mid-range tones. Kinda failed but here's another speedy.

EDIT: i put in a few more minutes into this

okee dokey Rinthe! sry i took a week, i went on a beach vacation i forgot about till last minute Mad

heres the O.G. then the overpaint

realize i flipped color temperatures between the key and the fill lighting, guess i wanted fire behind the guy hehheh, Some things i did-

block in with huge brushes: basically changed his whole silhouette, i think you could really get into this, simply analyze what the basic silhouette says and try to design the best one you can with uncomfortably big brushes. i tried to make him look big and mean, a problem occurred though- his left arm looks awful waaay too stretched out like this! so i would need to pose in the mirror to really get how it works. drawing errors like this will always bring a painting down!(I also took a spoon from the kitchen drawer to figure out how reflections might look for the next part. Using household items to get a grasp on what things look like is really helpful.)

layer carving: for the rim light on both sides of the knight i started a new layer, painted the pure white or orange roughly on the side of the knight, then used a big brush set on "clear" to carve it away to the desired shape. Also with varying opacity you brush away less or more to create a gradient effect- as seen on his left side skirt with the white light.

Quick masking: this is similar to layer carving but a bit more flexible. Press "Q" and you will enter quick mask mode, where you can basically draw a shape before deciding what color will go into the shape- this is very useful if you know whats gonna be there but don't know the value or color you want within the shape. The other really useful thing about quickmask is you can use smudge tool upon the mask to create really wild effects that you could neither get with the brush or smudgetool by itself. The sortof purpleish gradients leading into the body of the knight on the pauldron and side skirt were created with quickmasking. I find it most useful for subtle, transitional shapes.

Overlay: this is perhaps the most cheezy and easy to abuse of any digital trick, i took a picture of a gessoed canvas, and put it on a layer over the picture to give it texture. The most useful settings are probably "overlay" "soft light" and "hard light". More substle textures work best when shapes have low value contrast, harsher textures only really work when shapes read through them with very strong value contrast.

Sharpen tool:this is another that is very easy to abuse, but it does give a boost and a look that you can't get with just the normal paint tools. I sharpened the pauldron, the rim light on the helmet, and the white edge of the sword.

Gradient:if you've got big light coming in on the side, a gradient can be a good addition. I added a white gradient to the white side set on a very low opacity. Generally a gradient will indicate dust or fog in the air.

well thats about it i think, hope you benefit from this!
